Started dismantling the car for a closer look and to start the repairs.  Then things started falling off.   So had to start chopping.  chop  I needed to get some solid metal back into the car. Although it looks ok in this pic the floor of the car was rusty, it had parted company with the (now missing in action) lower edge of the inner sill and was wafer thin in places under the sound damping mats. Horrendous old 'repairs' put the nail in the coffin.  Chop.  New floor half going in.  |

So now the floor was in and lined up perfectly with the smidgen of of inner sill that was left I had me a datum point. Hurrah! So now i could get to chopping away the rest of the forward portion of the inner sill and putting in a new piece. I have opted to build the inner sill in two sections, replicating the factory.  So now i needed a datum point at the rear, as I was presented with this: (new forward portion of the inner sill just visible in this pic)  Strengthener had to be removed and put to one side for repair repair later so I could get to the rusty inner sill.  I cut away the worst of the inner sill (alot). The part that would provide me with a datum point for the rear would be this one as it wraps around the rear wheel tub. It would also replace the rotten rear beam mounts. I heart OEM repair panels.  Chop. Drill umpteen spot wells. Chop.  Good job that I did choppy chop. Hidden behind the chassis leg.  Are you sure you want a Mk1? :hehe: Cleaned and painted with weld-through primer and the grotty bit cut out out and replaced with fresh metal.  Boom! New chassis leg/rear beam mount in.    Rear datum point achieved, the new section lines up with the new floor to accept a new inner sill section and is spot on for dimensions as specified in the VW manual. Phew! |

Got some work to do there bud, will be worth it when its done. Are the panels easy enough to get hold of? not me doing most of the work, fortunately! it'd be a death trap if i did that much welding to it! almost all of the "structural" panels are still available via vw classic parts, either as original old stock, or because they are shared with the citigolf and still in production. there are a few that are reasonable quality pattern parts, and a couple that i can't get that are either being cut out of a donor car or being made by the guy doing the work. he's got some seriously good metalworking skills! Wow it's pretty rotten ! Thanks for making the effort to post the photos the rust on it is quite weird. there are some areas (like the n/s inner wing) that are known rust traps, but are virtually rot free, but other normally good parts that have rotted away completely. i've never sen one with a front crossmember rotted before. i'll keep posting the pics he sends me if yous lot want to see them  Did you buy that 2L engine for it? i've got a mate who's got a low mileage late mk2 golf gti 2 litre 8v, that is soon to be getting a 20vT transplant. the "scrap" engine, box and entire fuel system will be heading my way |

New rear portion of inner sill built.  Inner sill was painted in a high zinc primer, the strengthener reinstated  And new outer outer sill  Still have the bottom of the A pillar and portion of the rear wheel tub that meets the sills to rebuild, but want to get on with the structural welding of the car first, so on we go....choppy chop chop.... Got the drivers side done. Two yummy new floor pans.  Forward portion of inner sill constructed  And again, new leg/mount is required at the back  Remove the crap  Drill, drill drill  |

Thats pretty good going for a car that's seriously riddled with Tinworm.... Think I'd have given up....I admire your tenacity and perseverance... Cant wait to see it all finished.... What colour are you going for? My exploits with car renovation only go as far as replacing an inner/outer wing/front panel and front chassis leg on a 1970's Hillman Hunter that was accident damaged...Only to be followed by the Mother -in -laws 1974 Vauxhall Viva that needed two new inner wing repair panels/front wings/front panel... Anyhow there's more, not as adventurous as yours but dont wanna hijack your excellent thread.... More piccies please Mr Natedog |

What colour are you going for? I can't take any credit for this work. I've had the car 6 years, and every now and then I've looked at it and got very scared by the rust. Pics (and words) have been sent to me by the mug, erm I mean bloke, who took the job on. The only reason its getting done at all is I had a nice big refund from the revenue. As for colour, I'm flicking between that nice metallic blue on the current focus st, and rover cranberry red metallic. Although I'll probably go for something else! Planning on white bumpers and wheels, maybe with a white go faster stripe. Probably! |

and another update. i suspect the amount of rust the poor bloke has got to deal with on this car will either turn him to drink, or an addiction to prescription happy pills ;D On we go, Drivers side chassis leg and inner sill completed  And then, big moment...   Rear axle beam test reattached and the car is back on its wheels :yahoo: Onto the rear corners. Crusty.  Inner structures repaired.   As at 20:30 today.  |
