Eldest daughter is up from Wellingborough for a week….car booked in for MoT…Thursday.
Last service at the beginning of the year. She was advised it needed 2 new tyres on the back…
Checked r/n/s, ok good tread, r/o/s at the limit….oh good only on tyre then ( took some persuading to come off…alloy wheels! )…( she had the fronts done last yr, at MoT time. )
Took wheel off, took to tyre fitters place, got new tyre. Fitted to back all good.
Decided to pull fronts off anyway to check running gear pre MoT.. and to Coppaslip mating surfaces to prevent repeat of back issue.
F/o/s all good, only fitted last yr. F/n/s…oh feck! bald at the shoulder…scrubbed off…tread to wear indicators….bollox, another trip out…
Turns out her Idjit partner twatted the kerb at some point…bust the tyre. Got a replacement…I think he got a cheap part worn one…no way could the tread rub off to the limit in under 10k….but it accounts for the scrubbed shoulder…
I decided to fit both new tyres to the front, so a bit of wife tyre swapping was in order..,, Anyway, in for MoT and fw alignment later in the week.
Wish me luck…

Can’t see anything bent….track rod or lower sus arm….
Car drives ok esp. in a straight line…doesn’t wander on braking…
Maybe MoT man may pick summat up…? We’ll see..

Best tread should go on the rear - as recommended by almost all car and tyre manufacturers Understeer (poor front adhesion) is correctable by scrubbing off speed / braking Oversteer you're a passenger - spun one of my Golf estates, old hard rubber on the rear after 24 hours of downpour / standing water, 4 adults in the car. Ever since then new tyres have always gone on the rear of my cars. Motorwise told me and I ignored him....

This will ensure that have greater grip on the rear axle and should prevent any potential oversteer or loss of vehicle stability on slippery surfaces. Fitting new tyres on the rear can still cause aquaplaning on the front but it's much easier to control understeer than it is oversteer by having the rear tyres aquaplaning as has been experienced by Joepublic.

Best tread should go on the rear - Ah, the old debate starts again! I'm in the other camp... best tyres on the front. I have seen several debates on other forums and I think no one has reached a final conclusion. My attitude is due to an experience years ago. It was pouring rain and I was driving a rear wheel drive car with a heavy load in the boot. I saw a cyclist ahead and braked. The front wheels locked up and I lost all steering. I could turn the steering all the way from left to right with no effect and I was still going in a straight line with a cyclist in my path. I got out of that situation without any harm being done, but from then on I have always put the best tyres on the front

In my case the rear went clockwise 90 degrees, hit a grassy bank sending me the opposite way (full opposite lock on)360 degrees from there finishing 90 degrees to the road, mud and grass everywhere. The car is at least twice as long as it is wide making it more likely of an impact too. It was my regular journey to work, since that time I've seen many similar accidents on the same bend - the road is lower than the fields surrounding it and is 1/4 mile from a cheese factory so could be diesel contaminated which washes out after persistent rain? The car lived on with £100 of behind the scene bits (arch liners, front number plate and sundries) and cable ties lol

Quick update….. It’s been a tw*t of a week car wise….2 tyres earlier…. Today took it for MoT, but the TPMSlight is on and won’t go off! Ffs…Tried to reset it before presenting….but no go. The book says you need the man from delmonte with a widget… Any way, Mr. MoT man proceeds with the test, middle seat belt in the back won’t release..! Grrr..Noted. Front o/s spring is losing its plastic coating and is pitted…ready to break if you sneeze at it.. Anyhow, it passed, after freeing the seat belt which had locked up because yours truly had been cleaning the dustbin car out and I had the rear seats down…( make a note for next time..) So off I went…then ‘bing’….ffs, the fuel warning light came on…jeez she’s left with no fecking juice… So drove back sharpish to chez moi. Rang round for some springs….no stock…only GSF had a pr. Rang round for wheel alignment, only one place does drive thru….happened to be the cheapest too. (£35…) So got the tracking done on a posh 4 wheel setup, the dude gave me the print out and said ‘ aven’t a clue what it all means…’ inspiring that is!! Picked up the springs at 11, all done by 2-20. Inc putting all the toys away… Girlie is well pleased ( but not at having to relieve her bank balance of some money… ) and happy that car is good to go. Oh and the tpms is all clear, seems it needs to learn after having new tyres fitted..( shite! )

And I hope replacing the springs hasn't altered the tracking again.

I thought that after I’d had it tracked….
But as the struts are a secure 2 point mount I thought it would/should be ok….I’ve not disturbed the lower arm/track rod end/ steering arm etc.
Anyway lessons learned I guess..

Well the total is: £160 for 2 tyres £40 for an MoT test £35 for fwa £103 for 2 front springs and £30 for fuel….
Go figure…
I can underwrite the amount no problem…,
But…
What pisses me off is she lets him drive her car, but he won’t help with running and maintenance costs..,but expects me to fix it when it’s broken….

Quick V40 update.
Motor's still behaving itself and its been giving a right old hammering over the last few weeks, but keeps coming back for more.
MPG seems to be about 37-40mpg in mixed use, so not bad at all for a 150bhp Petrol car with lots of AC running, its also very comfortable on a long run.
The only real downside is the lack of boot space compared to the MK2 Focus, as the boot floor is much higher to make room for a spacesaver spare.
Speaking of spare wheels, I picked up a used Focus mk3 spacesaver for £30 yesterday, so I can now give my brother the spacesaver for his Focus back!

We're off to Yorkshire for a week with the dogs... Jobs done on the L405 so far Oil cooler replace Turbo drain gasket replace NSR outer CV boot replace OSF inner CV boot clamp replace Wheels & tyres replace Four wheel align Air suspension height calibration Liftgate alignment (seriously out!) Liftgate closure seals
Service with all filters & fluids (with. diffs, xfer box, less transmission - for now) Update Nav. data to latest 2022 Aircon degas/regas Replace HiD lamps with LED's
No doubt there'll be other stuff after this shakedown trip, the trader has been reasonable enough (although mostly through gritted teeth) in paying for most of the parts and all of the (my) labour at schedule times.
