Did you skim the head,if so had it maybe been done before, timing is pretty easy on the 8v not a lot to go wrong, although just a tooth out will cause problems.Common for gasket to burn out at 1 and 2.

Because it sounds to me like the battery is weak or its got a ground problem So when the starter comes up against compression it can't get the engine round But starts cranking again as it creeps past tdc

I've lost count the amount of times I've checked it. It was out to start off with but certainly isn't now It was out to start off with but certainly isn't now Damage already done?

The 1108cc FIRE engine might be an an interference one. The 1242 8v is a freewheeler.
Did you spin the cam with the head off? If so, was it turning Ok?
The only time I've seen a 1242 bend a valve was as a result of a very bad head skim. The head was planed at an angle rather than flat.
As suggested, take the plugs out and turn by hand. Recheck the timing and make sure the cam isn't out 180 degrees, and that you've put the crank pulley on correctly.

Could the leads have been mixed up before you saw them - and you are putting them back in wrong order again ?

Battery had had a jump pack on it and still does the same. Maybe I need to check engine earths tho to be sure. It's 1242 8v and the head was skimmed by someone who build engines for a living so would hope it's spot on

As said Check the basics first +1 here. This sounds just like the leads are out, or the ignition timing is set on the wrong cylinder. If the timing was just out by a few degrees it wouldn't matter, but this engine sounds like its trying to fire backwards, so get a timing lamp on it whilst an assistant turns the key.

Are these engines fitted with a distributor or a coil pack?

just crank it with coils disconnected , it will stop the spark and eliminate firing at wrong time.

Are these engines fitted with a distributor or a coil pack? Some have twin coils at the end of the cam. I wonder could the feed cables be swapped around....?

It's got two coil packs on it plugs round wrong way might be possible I guess if they are I will kick myself tho. I can't see how my cam timing can be out as I've checked it over and over again.
