Been looking at the larger VW group SUVs, Seat Tarraco especially as next family car, manual with 1.5Tsi engines. To see if there are any common mot fail points I looked up the histories of 20 - 30 cars currently for sale. Apart from many failing on the first MOT due to headlamp alignment issues, so probably set up wrong at the factory, there seem to be a few failing because the airbag fault light is on by around 40,000 miles. This often seems to be the switch in a seatbelt buckle or seat sensor so no big deal I guess. Other than the 1.5tsi kangarooing problem that was supposedly fixed with a software update, and they seem to eat brakes by 30k miles I couldn't spot any obvious common problems.. one on 100k has destroyed a wheel bearing, another on 80k had a driveshaft needing replacing..
Tiguan Allspace, Skoda Kodiaq 1.5 petrols... a pretty safe bet??

My Son has a Tiguan, MY66....although his is diesel
Had various issues during his tenure...
1 failure of a glo plug/pressure sensor...
Front brakes- discs and pads replaced...
Front o/s wheel bearing changed due to abs ring failure..( painful having a ring fail...lol..)
Rear springs caused its latest MoT failure...
Cant think of any more...to date..other than tyres...
Has covered around 55K to memory..he been happy with it so far..
Nobster has the 1.5TFSI model, he might be able to help?
Me personally, I drive a MY19 Passat diesel estate 2.0l tdi 190 R-Line...its grrrrreeeat as Tony the tiger would say..

I have a VW passat estate highline with a DSG box and a 2.0ltr diesel in it - it 2012 and done 130k (getting a bit tired).
My next car will be the same - passat estate with DSG box - but I will go for the 1.5 TSi petrol lump next...

Hey Chippie, thanks for the reply.
I try to keep a car as long as possible and keep the costs as low as possible so just wary of buying a potential money pit.
I had considered Passat, and Octavia Estate, SUV choice is driven by the Mrs of course, like most of them seem to be. I have to admit they're pleasant places for passengers, for the kids on the back seat and dog in the boot, so SUV it has to be I guess!
I only do about 5 - 7k miles a year so petrol probably makes more sense, and I'm wary of everything that can go wrong on a Euro 6 derv. I know petrols are almost as bad these days for emissions gubbins but perhaps a bit less to go wrong.
Heavier car so brakes will go if you drive it hard I guess, I try to be as light footed as possible, so not worried about that.
The 1.5TSi is a long life dry belt I think, sounds like the kangarooing problems were sorted a couple of years ago with a software update. Otherwise I guess its just luck and regular servicing and fingers crossed turbo will last, crankcase breather won't be oily and it'll be DIY friendly- just the usual worry with a new car about trolley jack + axle stand placement and I'll be good

ta Remmington for the reply - yeah my first choice last time I was playing the new car game was a Passat, great for space and practicality. I might keep my old focus estate for the tip runs and other messy jobs so the fancy new Tarraco doesn't get messed up

The Kodiak has around 17% more boot space compared to the Tarraco,it’s also slightly higher and wider…basically it’s a bit bigger! But not by much if yo7 put them side by side..the Tiguan Allspace is very similar to the Tarraco, sharing many body panels…
It’s a shame that the bigger 2.0 TFSI engines from the Audi range aren’t available…instead of the 1.5

Yeah I saw the Kodiaq bootspace was coming up as a bit bigger on spec, perhaps the seats fold a bit flatter, much of a muchness though. Shame you cant remove the last row altogether and have a flat boot with more room, but it wasn't to be. Out of the three the Tarraco seems to be the best value looking at used prices so I can live with a little less boot

grimep Like chip mentioned earlier I do have a VW Tiguan 2019 Evo Match Manual 6 speed (19 plate) 1.5 TSI with all the toys130 BHP bought not the 150 BHP MODEL in October 2021 so had it three years apart from annual servicing it's been a good car.I only do 5-6k a year so running costs are decent. it was 8k miles when I bought it and done 25k now so 17k miles in three years. When I got it the service schedule was set for a flexible service schedule ie every two years so first time I had it's service schedule reset to a yearly fixed service schedule. RFL is £190 for 12 months and fuel consumption for me is running round 35-36 mpg but on a run it can do 40 plus according to the computer. Mine was five years old earlier this year and I was under the impression that the cambelt was due but according to the independent garage I've known for a while and trust VW in their wisdom have changed the cambelt schedules from 60k or 5 years to whichever comes first too 10 years or 120k miles for the 1.5TSI engine don't know about the 2 litre TSI. I did go round to my local VW Dealer to enquire why. All I will say is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard lol. Only issue I've had with it is the drivers door 4 way switch broke so had to buy a new one which was about £50 plus VAT IIRC. Go and drive what your looking at and never driven a 2 litre TSI but they might be thirsty I don't know for sure but secondhand ones are IIRC more expensive than the petrol 1.5 TS. Hope this helps good hunting. I really wanted a Volvo XC40 but out of my budget so either what I bought or Ford Kuga drove all three then chose.

Ta for the reply Nobby, yeah hopefully I won't notice the costs too much, rfl is about 5x my current car, insurance twice as much and they only get 2/3 the mpg, and cost of living isn't exactly getting better. Maybe the next government won't be so set on punishing motorists!
I guess the 2.0 will be a bit juicy if it was available. In the 1.5 I guess 50 - 70 will be a bit slow in a 1.7 ton car with 4 passengers and luggage but on paper the performance looks ok.
I tried to steer the Mrs towards a Tiguan and we went to VW last weekend to sit in one, but having been in a Kodiaq and Allspace she felt it wasn't quite big enough!
I'm looking at 69/70 Tarracos as they seem cheaper than Tiguans and Kodiaqs but seem to pretty much be the same car.
I'll want to DIY service mine as I'll hopefully keep it until it doesn't matter about resale and a service record. I'd imagine it will be pretty easy to work on.
Might go see one tomorrow, hopefully the one I'm interested in hasn't sold already, they stuck a fresh MOT on yesterday so maybe it's got a new home...

The Tarraco shares mechanical underpinnings with the Volkswagen Tiguan and Škoda Kodiaq I believe and whilst its door panels are shared with the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. The car is built alongside the Tiguan at Volkswagen's factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. Check the Insurance and as a guide I'm 70 now but when the insurance was due on nine it was £340 ish fully comp clean licence. i believe you are younger. except Roverman Daddy of the Forum possibly.

Yep Nobby, I saw they were built on the German production line, so not the Spanish rubbish 😄
I got one quote with my current insurer for me and the Mrs, her inc business use, came back around 435 plus another 35 to protect the NCB
I should probably shop around, also change the Mrs business use and see if it goes down...

My Indi garage sends everyone to a main dealer and I understand at a cost of £1200 ish per vehicle if you want it doing. his daughters got a Seat Leon with the same engine as mine and he won't do that either because of the expensive equipment needed to set up the timing system 3 grand a pop I believe. he just can't justify the outlay to recoup his money.

Uh oh, money pit! Yeah that's the kind of gotcha I'd rather avoid. Well, good to know about Apparently its down to the VVT? Googled around a bit and yeah, sounds like you're right, though a couple of people pop up claiming to have got their 1.5tsi done for 500 - 600. I'd better open a savings account for when the day comes round VW 1.5 Tsi Timing With Special Tool www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXPTn6Yxttw
