Its a DV6, the pickup is 99.3% blocked with sludge anyway!

In all seriousness, unless its small enough to go through the pickup strainer I'd imagine it'll be OK.

Then claim off the insurance saying it was stolen….but report it to the feds first to avoid suspicion……

Good question...?
----------
I pulled a sump off a VAG 1.6 diesel engine the other month - flickering oil light on idle. With a view to inspect the wet belt driven oil pump.
To find - tin foil seals from oil additive cans stuck over strainer.
Searched boot of car to find collection of new Comma additive plastic bottles.
A lessor person would have sold the owner the pump and belt - but this action would have not stopped him feeding the tin foil seals into the sump into the future.
----------
The definative answer to your question is: Did you find the dipstick like this - if so the owner is paying and you can take the sump off and retrieve it.

Fix it properly and no comeback

The dipstick broke on me servicing my pals van. I will give him the option of sump removal.
My theory is if it broke on me it was going to break on him.
Sump off and retrieve will probably end up needing a new sump. 🙄

If it's high-mileage, then you could convince your mate of the benefits of cleaning the strainer-gauze, as Remmington says. It isn't just the plastic bit to come out, but all the crud around the bottom of the sump.

A good concept - set in fact - you could sell onto the customer. -------- Goldern rule of car repairs is. If there is any risk/cost saving - the customers must take it and accept it.

Removing the sump is easy enough, they should be replaced though - PSA & Ford workshop instructions say they're single use only. In fairness, there's very few modern engines that have a build-up of anything in the sump these days - unless you count bits of con rod, crank, or other fundamental bits of metalwork... Choking of turbo oil feed pipes is quite common, mainly only changed once the turbo has failed first.

I've gave him the option and the possible outcomes.
Offered to put a new sump on at £85 if he wants to be certain of no issues from rogue bit of dipstick.

Offered to put a new sump on at £85 if he wants to be certain of no issues from rogue bit of dipstick. £85 quid for: New oil pan - RTV - sump bung & seal - labour - fixing bolts - solvent cleaner - engine oil (oil filter?). Seems a bargin to me: He refused? ?
