having blown two coil packs on his never ever serviced 1.6 zetec se focus, I told my self proclaimed DIY mechanic brother in law that it will be his plugs that are the problem, and so he took one out and sure enough it was totally worn out........taking the others out he has snapped one off leaving the threaded section behind Do you guys have any tips/hints on getting the remaining threaded section out.... I know its probably best going to the local mechanic, and I havent seen the car yet but I though I would have a go first with my limited skills and as funds are pretty tight for him at this time......I wont be trying too hard as obviousley dont want to casue any more damage... These are the pics he has sent me.....

I use some easy outs by snap on
And haven't failed yet *
I doubt you have these, but a tx or spline drive bit hammered into the remaining spark plug Does the same job
You may need to use a breaker bar
You need to start with small turns back/forth
And try and get some release fluid in there.
It helps if the engines warm
* only had to remove one or two cylinder heads over the years

Motorcraft plugs are practically designed to rot in, no chrome coating just painted. seen some right horrors.
Face lift 2005> Focus is notorious for it.
Put a powerful airline down the plug hole valves closed to get any debri out. Bear in mind these engines are not solid steel like the old Ka/Fiesta 1300. Too dangerous to crank the debri out. If theres anything left in it could well find its way down the side of a piston or behind a valve. Seen it all before.

They stopped using them black thread plugs a good few years ago I guess these haven't been changed in some time

Another thumbs up for the allen key/torx method. I got the threaded portion of a denso iridum plug I overtightened out of an alfa head that way.

Yes I bet they havn't been changed for a few years, I thought of that after I posted, remembered buying some that were chromed.
Seen plugs where the hexagon is completely disintegrated into rust and the central electrode is detached from the porcelain floating free and comes out with the HT lead !
If efiste2 can find out how long those plugs have been in we could all have a guessing game. I guess 4 years and 10 months ;D

Nasty job....
I have to resort to drilling these and fitting oversized thread inserts
Forget heli-coils for this job.

Watched my dad get one out that was sheared same way, he hammered a straight blade screwdriver into the remains and used mole grips on the square shaft of the screwdiver, took him a while but it worked. AL

If you can get enough access i have got a few out by fitting an old socket extension/bar inside the plug sleeve and tack welding the sleeve to the bar. The cooling weld appears to shrink the sleeve which helps removal
