Super thumbs up for Zurich insurance - quoted job out to them Friday of last week with photos by email - they rang and authorised today (Monday) - email landed with details 30 mins after phone call. Also from authorisation - Zero excess to be paid on release of vehicle.
Not seen an insurer turn an estimate into an authorisation that quickly for years.

Did you manage to get genuine parts authorized?

Did you manage to get genuine parts authorized? No... Genuine Honda cat and two genuine sensors would write off the 55plate car. Car books at £700 trade. Insurance engineer did ring the owner to explain the situation. To be honest - the actions of the idiot who stole the CAT - wrote the car off!

2005 Honda Jazz... Exhaust pipe cut thru on Tesco's car park at 9.30am in the morning. Best Police can offer is a crime number. Needs: Front pipe - Cat - two O2 sensors - middle section - two rubbers - and fitting kits. Plus MIL light reset. What we have here - is a little old ladies car with 44.000 miles on the clock - insurance claim will "write it off" - but the well looked after car - has a higher personal value and worth than it's "book value". If I do it with an aftermarket cat - pipes and NGK sensors - the bill will be expensive. Plus the lady won't have such a good car after the repair - than before. This sort of thing annoys me - no end! Rescued one today, 55 plate Jazz Automatic with 33k on the clock Cat and both sensors chopped out in a busy car park in Castleford, they had it on CCTV but they had parked away so you couldn't see their motor 😡

Another victim...What is CAT worth? Who buys them? Is there not control on the sale (scrap metal)? I assume if you knock the guts out of the CAT it becomes untraceable! I am in the motor repair trade - I never get a CAT to sell - they go back as surcharge normally. If we have to get rid of an "end of use" car. We leave the CATS on - to induce the recovery lads to collect the dead cars and keep our yard clear - create car parking space for paying cars.

Nice young couple from down south, they moved up North to settle down and start a family, car had been his nan's. Its a shame, nice little motor to get them going, probably get crushed now, fingers crossed Hastings insurance are as good as Zurich

Some proper "rough justice" was meted-out on the Outer Isles recently;
One of the regular tool vans comes over from Eire to pedal his wares two or three times a year- fairly persistent at it, as well........ Anyway, one of his favourite tricks is to look around the yards of all the commercial garages he visits, as many as will stand him keep interrupting their daytime business, and spy for old exhaust systems. These he then casts his beady eyes over for catalysts, and then trades/barters/whatever for shonky Chinese tools with American-sounding names........
Needless to say, these dealings are a bit "edgey" with regard to HMRC, and he got his come-uppance last Summer when the local inspectorate was notified that he was operating his (new) van on the Outer Isles for several days. The plod stopped him, found no supporting paperwork that tallied with what was in the back of his van (lots of catalysts, if the rumours are correct), and promptly brought this to the attention of HMRC. The plod themselves could have dealt with this, but a slap on the wrist and a caution would not have been true justice. If you really hate someone, get HMRC involved, they have far more powers to get "real justice".
He watched whilst they brought in a mobile crusher, and his van was ceremoniously crushed in front of him, full of all the illicit catalysts and also full of all the new Chinese tools, lock, stock, and barrel............Like I said, the van was new.......and nobody has been troubled this year so-far.

I fitted a catalyst unit to a Toyota Auris hybrid on Friday, that had been jacked up and stolen, this one was actually unbolted. The theives must have this like a formula 1 pitstop.
2 spring loaded bolts to the centre section, 2 of the same to the manifold, wrench the o2 wires out, slice the 2 rubber hangers. last bit is a brace that runs under the exhaust system, 4 bolts, they removed 3 and loosened the last to swing it our the way.
Cost the taxi owner £750 with us doing it cheap.
I replaced the brace bolts with some with a different head size, double nutted the spring loaded bolts to the centre section.
So hopefully if they come back toole up with only the normally required tools it will stop or slow the thieving scum.

A friend of mine had his Prius Cat stolen recently from his residents parking bay in a sleepy village in West Sussex.
It damned near wrote it off.
They cut through the oxygen sensor wiring harness.
He's had it repaired and took it to his local garage to get the 2 front nuts welded up.
And also fitted a dash cam

I cannot remember - I don't think so! He has all the names written-down in his cab - he now has a new van, unbelievably......
Anyway, you can tell his providence, because the last time he "came calling" at just the wrong moment during a repair, he called me by my Dog's name, the deceased dog at that!!
