Here's the new one. I need to keep spending to a minimum as I think I'll just try and flip this out in the summer for a small profit It was restored by Kraftwerks in Stoke about 10 years ago, or so I'm led to believe so beginning to look a little tired now but not too bad. There's a few gremlins to sort out but famous last words, it seems quite solid - so I hope this doesn't turn into a body off full restoration. My first ever beetle, and apart from a couple of small engine two stroke motorbikes and a jet-ski, it's the first vehicle I've had that isn't a water cooled inline 4.

Depends what it's like whe nyou start to stip it back and what the underneath is like? I like but they can be a money pit. 1971 1302S with the 1600cc engine but change that exhaust it let's the car down IMO.

One thing I'm looking at is changing the exhaust, I know they're noisy but this is obscene, I'd rather go a little more OE. However I'm lead to believe the exhaust is some kind of performance system and it actually goes pretty well so I need to chose a replacement carefully as I don't want to ruin how it runs.

You would advise on that depending if the engine is standard or been modified. Any idea if it's standard engine or not?

Unfortunately I've no idea if it's modified or not as I have no history. But I've got a mate who knows his way around a flat 4 better than I do taking a look on the weekend so I hope to get a better idea of what it is I actually have after that.

Looks lovely, what did it cost you? Some of these are fetching strong money now It was up for sale at £3700 ono but I negotiated reasonably well so I'm very happy with what it owes me. I actually did a swap so it doesn't have a cash value as such but I know what I was willing to let my car go for and I think the swap worked quite favorably in my direction. Being a 70's one I don't think it's as sought after as the earlier ones and for the purists because it has more modern suspension and steering it's not a 'real' Beetle so not as valuable. But like most things when the 'original' is out of peoples price band the value filters down the line. I remember a time when a bay window camper was the real poor mans choice and would change hands for a few hundred, now the splittys are so out of reach the bay windows command good money and even the T25 is sought after.

You did well, I think you made a good investment there, although, as you say, the devil is in the detail underneath.....

Well I'm beginning to unearth some of the devils work. See my most recent thread: carmechanics.proboards.com/thread/3957/help-required-decent-union-supplier?page=1&scrollTo=54238So yes, this is the fuel line bodge. A 6mm fuel hose, push fitted into an 8mm line rather than use a reducer. All nicely hidden behind the fan shroud. At least I've detected why it stinks of fuel, should be an easy fix. The other main bodge, the wiring loom! This apparently is the addition of front and rear heated screens but I'm not sure if there's other stuff patched into this also. Basically I'll be looking to replace/redo the lot. And I love the way it's all draped over the top of the fuel tank.

Shame to see it go up in flames..... Best get that wiring sorted pronto.....
When I was an apprentice, one of the guys I worked with had a 1303S, went quite well for a car of that era... Love the old shape...

Yes I was surprised at how well it goes. But don't worry it's safely tucked up in the garage. The previous owner was using it daily but I'm in no rush to put any miles on it so it won't be going anywhere till I've had chance to sort out the fuel and electrics - not a great combination, I feel like it's a time bomb at the moment.

That clear plastic fuel is lethal, can't understand some people when they use/carry out repairs like that, fair enough as a get you home fix but to use it every day is just asking for problems.
