The wiring is amazing!! I love the way they have tried to use it all as some sort of radio antenna - didn't the guy possess a wire-cutter in his toolbox? At least if you replace it all with decent wiring, you've got plenty of copper to weigh-in!!

It seems the intent was dual purpose loom / cargo net I was at Stanford hall VW show 2 years ago and there was a guy selling new, ready to fit looms for various years of bugs for not unreasonable sums of money. There's a guy on FB who specialises in mobile electrical repairs for aircooled VWs. www.facebook.com/VWAIRCOOLEDAUTOELECTRICREPAIRNW/

That loom appears to be all down to the aftermarket heated front and rear screens that have been fitted, also patched into this is the stereo. The whole lot appears to be quite self contained including what looks like it's own feed from the battery, and inline fuses and relays etc. with just a take off from the ignition for the key live.
The good think is I could remove the whole lot without disturbing the original loom, and re-do it to a better standard.
The original loom, apart from the odd join and crimped blue spade connector looks to be OK. I have seen replacement full looms at around £250-300, but I'm thinking once I battle all the aftermarket ads-ons hopefully all I'll need is some heat shrink and a few fresh connectors and perhaps the odd replacement inch here and there. I've got some old Looms removed from broken VWs so if I need to repair any sections I should even be able to chop those up for spares and use the correct VW colours.
As for it being a keeping, I'm afraid not. I just always wanted one since growing up with and loving the Herbie films, I just never got round to owning one before - it never seemed practical. But this opportunity arose so I thought I'd take advantage to scratch that itch and get this out of my system.
The family are not keen, even though my boy is 17 at the end of the year and apparently they make great first cars as the insurance is so cheap. It's £80 for me, which I was told is basically an admin fee.... that's pretty much as cheap as insurance gets.
The plan is to do the best I can with these tidy up jobs, there's a few paint scabs that could do with some attention and paint finish of the previous respray isn't great up close so I'm tempted to bring out the mop.
The MOT expires today, I'm in no rush to use it this time of the year hence why I took it out for a final blast yesterday. But I'll give it a good once over attend to what it needs and get the MOT on it late Feb, or March with the intention to take it to a few spring and summer shows and see if I can drum up any interest for it and hopefully make a little profit for my effort.
Either way I'd be happy to break even knowing I've at least now finally added a Beetle to my history of ownership.
That said, when it actually gets round to spring and I can start actually using it a bit more without concern for road salt, winter grime and slippery surfaces I might have a change of heart.
