Twin Sparks drink so much oil they run the sumps dry unless an eye is kept on them, meaning a lot are killed by buggered bottom ends. In fairness his only started using oil in the last 12 months, its been a fantastic car, spent almost nothing on it in 6 years...................

Does anyone know the maindealer procedure for dealing with a oil consumption concern ? Only saw one and that was years ago, had the dipstick fastened shut with a cable tie affair, then went back after 500 miles for level checking. Can't exactly remember what happened other than it was pronounced within specs. 1 litre per 1000 miles, seems extreme to me, I can remember the 70s, some owners would be saving for a rebuild with that consumption. We had to follow Audi's GFF plan, you had to drain the oil, weigh it, refill with old oil and top it up to max also weighing the amount to top up, paint seal/mark dipstick and sump bung, then send them off for approx 1000km/600 miles. Then drain the oil, weigh the amount and complete the GFF plan, then inform technical and await the outcome with baited breath ;D ;D Some of the owners I dealt with would have been chuffed to bits if they where only burning a litre every 1000miles, some where munching through a litre every 600miles

I've just done my oil today on the 7 Series I have. Over the past week or so when piling into a bend the dash displayed "Low oil - STOP ENGINE" but it went off after a few seconds. Checking it last night, (yeah I know, I'm lazy), I found the level wasn't registering on the dip So I rang a couple of places I use for parts, one quoted me £46.99 for 5 litres of fully synthetic 5w/30 which I thought was a p*ss take. So I rang the other spot and got the same oil for £20.34 ;D Now she's all topped up gear changes are smoother, I don't need as much throttle as I did and the "blowing exhaust" (the wife said it was that), has vanished Mind you, I had to pop to a garage I use for stuff I can't do myself because the car needs to be on a 4 post lift to 'borrow' a 1 3/8 socket to get the cap off the oil filter housing. Still, changing out the filter was a 5 min job, cap off, old filter out, new in, cap back on. I like it when BMW make life easy like that, not that it's often since the 10 min jobs on 99% of other cars takes an hour due to all the covers that have to be removed first.

Most (80%) of the cars presented for repair in our workshops are low on oil. When we top them up and add the oil to the bill, some of the customers moan and looked shocked. Saying "cars don't use oil nowadays". Secretly I think, they think we are adding extras to the bill. Now that is for sure.. Customers will not see it as helpful although it may just save their engine!! I used to say I was unable to touch the car until it was topped up. " have you got some in the boot or would you like to buy some? And you ain't entitled to a further recovery as I think the low oil is partly the cause of the problem" And I wonder why I never get a tip ;D sent from my HTC using proboards android app

Otherwise They sign a disclaimer before we start the engine. Amazing how many people ask if our prices are competitive for fluids and batteries at 23.30pm when they are 75 miles from home in the middle of nowhere and the car wont start. I bet they dont ask in the motorway services or the all night garage
