Had brother in law and family staying over Christmas. After arriving (280 mile journey) he asked if I could look at the car as it had been making a slight rattling noise for a couple of weeks (3 yr old Astra 1.4). Checked the oil level, nothing registered. Added nearly 3 litres of oil to bring it up to the max. Sounds ok now! So it had spent the last few hours on the motorway doing 80mph on a litre of oil Supposed to have been serviced a few weeks ago at main dealer although that's no excuse for not checking oil levels.

That must have shortened the life of the engine surely?

I think a high number of vehicles don't get there oil level checked between services
As for the ones who don't even get a service
Then you get them boo hooing when a major component goes Bye bye

Typical main dealer service then!!!

I saw the same model maybe 12 month ago. Similar story except it was serviced at dealer six month previous. Oil light had come, practically nothing in sump, and engine sounded double nasty.
Damage was done, it ended up burning more oil than petrol and exploded into pieces several month later.
Wouldn't want to own a Vauxhall these days, so many severely faulty examples about it can't be coincidence.

I was just amazed that it actually survived running for that long and sounded ok after topping up. Although as you say there must be some internal damage.
I recently had a similar situation with a Corsa 3 pot which ran very low on oil due to the pressure switch leaking. Sounded ok afterwards but about 3 months later the chain snapped causing 8 bent valves!
I always say to people, forget the 20k intervals and do an oil change every 10k or less, but when things are running well they seem to forget.

I wonder if privately bought new cars burn less oil than company registrations that are retailed as 'almost new'.
My thinking is company cars, or worse still, daily hire, are mercilessly red-lined from day 1 (we've all done it), engines ruined and set to limp through the warranty period as the first irreversible empty sump slips under the owners radar.
Up to 600 one year old cars a week go through just our local block alone, many of them daily hire, many of them horribly abused examples, and they all end up looking spik & span on forecourts before proceeding to sit on somones drive.
Makes you wonder, certainly makes me wonder enough not to buy one.

Yes I have thought the same Tom So the dollar you saved on that nearly new car could cost you dear in the future And you wouldn't even know

My sister bought a 1997 Astra almost new which started out as a hire car. Still got it and it's never burnt a drop of oil.
If a car burns even a slight amount of oil, let's say half a litre every 2k miles, that's easily enough to empty the sump in 20k!

Most (80%) of the cars presented for repair in our workshops are low on oil.
When we top them up and add the oil to the bill, some of the customers moan and looked shocked. Saying "cars don't use oil nowadays".
Secretly I think, they think we are adding extras to the bill.
