Most (80%) of the cars presented for repair in our workshops are low on oil. When we top them up and add the oil to the bill, some of the customers moan and looked shocked. Saying "cars don't use oil nowadays". Secretly I think, they think we are adding extras to the bill. I'd agree with that Makes you wonder why most manufactures still bother with a dip stick When the dipstick behind the wheel doesn't use it

Does anyone know the maindealer procedure for dealing with a oil consumption concern ?
Only saw one and that was years ago, had the dipstick fastened shut with a cable tie affair, then went back after 500 miles for level checking.
Can't exactly remember what happened other than it was pronounced within specs.
1 litre per 1000 miles, seems extreme to me, I can remember the 70s, some owners would be saving for a rebuild with that consumption.

Customers will not see it as helpful although it may just save their engine!!

Doesn't help that vauxhall say an acceptable usage is 1l every 1000km not just vox, lots of other manufacturers allow this much or more!! What's the figure in miles around 700 miles That figure is far to high Ford mo co state maximum oil consumption of 0.1 litre per 1000 km Are you sure you've not read it wrong

I would set the level to maximum and record the mileage and get them to return within the specific mileage ie 1000km Remember you could have excessive oil dilution too with a rising oil level Most ford engine consumption figures are around 0.1 litre per 1000 km for diesel And 0.5 litre per 1000 km for petrols

Can tell you've never owned an Alfa ;D ;D ;D My old JTS had a thirst for oil. I was checking and topping up after 700 miles or so. At £40 for a 5 litre can of oil, it wasn't cheap Biggest problem with todays cars is that they are oil specific. Gone are the days of buying a can of 15W/40, and being able to use that on most cars. Now, each oil has to meet different requirements as set out by the manufacturers

Twin Sparks drink so much oil they run the sumps dry unless an eye is kept on them, meaning a lot are killed by buggered bottom ends.
