Yeah I learned a lot since owning a diesel…. I now always fill the fuel filter after a change…or in the case of vag cars, now I have Vcds, use the tank pump to fill it… Even 300Tdi LR engines - fill the filter to the top before easing it into the engine-bay. That way, when you find that the lift-pump is either a) knack'd or b) missing the priming-lever because someone has fitted a Delphi aftermarket unit, you can still crank the engine on the starter, let it burst into life, and let the Bosch VE high-pressure pump deal with the rest of the purging; it will do this if you just have a small pocket of air on the top of the filter, but cannot cope with "a quarter filter volume".
The pocket of air that a Bosch VE unit will purge, is more than the amount of air to bring a Ford to its knees completely for several hours of sweating and cursing. Ahh, the good old days of proper Diesel Engineering. By the people who "just know".
