To be fair, it's 'not bad' - 08 plate V50 'sport' D5, body is solid & straight, tyres reasonable quality & nearly new, brake pads & discs nearly new, it's got a DPF but the exhaust suggests it's been mapped out, as does DTC P7700...
It was a trade-in at work, cost me/him £1500 with 128k on it, MoT until late November
Now the downside(s) Aircon working but compressor shows signs of an oil leak - no biggie
Minor coolant leak - may have already been fixed and the dried coolant is residue as nothing showing under a pressure test - to be monitored
Driveshaft oil seal leaking - again, no biggie
One injector blowing - actually two as I found out today, the obvious one needed the engine crane to help remove it, the other only came to light as I was washing the top of the engine. both cleaned out, seats cut and refitted with new seals & clamps.
Now here's the reason for the post - there's what 'feels' like a bit of hesitancy around 1800rpm, it idles as well as I remember a five-potter doing and it's clean revving. Normally I'd just plug it into Vida and look at the live values and cylinder balance - but i'm not at a Volvo dealer anymore, I've been looking at some of the cheaper end diag tools which will (or say they will) read live values and code injectors. I'm wary of the Chinese knock-offs but don't want to spend more than a couple of hundred or so on something that once the issues are sorted, won't (hopefully) get too much use. Any suggestions?

EGR and inlet manifold need cleaning I bet

Possibly, they tend to affect the idle and all the way through the rev range though... I may well do a quick spill test but I'd like to see some live values first.

Might be worth investigating if the Forscan toolset will extend to this one? This is basically a Focus EUCD platform in-drag, so there's a fighting chance that Forscan would talk to it authoritatively.
All my Volvo work is done over Autocom CDP+ (as is most other general work these days) imply because the Swedish team are mustard-hot on Volvo's. Even the mid-90's stuff just works over this toolset. However, not many places have this kit - I just went that route to avoid the Chinese toolsets.

Forscan might not do what you need it to, as IIRC Ford never used the 5-pot diesel in any of its own badged platforms, only the petrol.

Autocom looks good - but it costs about the same as the car... I doubt the Forscan will entertain it, neither will my Autologic which is LR-only. I might have to look more closely at the various Vida hacks...

The spill test was pretty inconclusive, there is a wide variation between the highest and lowest but the others fill the gap pretty well. I'm thinking of a compression check as the next stage to rule out camshaft follower wear - there's not any excessive crankcase pressure so unlikely to be bores or rings. If the compression check is OK then the choice is pretty much either get the injectors checked or buy one new one and move it around - the cost is about the same. It's less than ideal to do it that way but without being able to see the cylinder contribution / trim values it's the most cost effective way seeing as the labour costs £0.00/hr.

Went in to work today, I'd been ruminating over the 'hesitation', whipped the injectors out - well, whipped four out, Cyl.1 was also leaking past but not as bad as the other two but bad enough to not to want to release it's grip, that cheered me up a bit, it's bound to be that! got the injector out, cleaned the bores & a light reaming of the seats then the results were in! In Bar: 23, 27, 20 (technical fail at this point as maximum variation is 4 Bar) 26 & 12... the last one was the one with the reluctant injector, I cleaned & reseated the tester twice, still the same result - I didn't bother with a leak test or putting a bit of oil in the bore, whatever it is - possibly inlet cam followers as these are not known for piston ring or bore issues, I won't be dealing with it. One of the benefits of buying a trade-in is that the admin moves slowly, we'd not paid or confirmed we were happy to buy in writing and only took it on road test on trade plates, all it's cost me is £10 for the valeter to give it a clean and a bit of time. All I have to do now is wait for another reasonably priced estate to be traded in...

Already have! keys are back in the key press, no further involvement from me Used car market is a "mine field". I dred buying a car for myself - let alone for the spawn. ------------ I really don't care what I drive as long as it works. Where everybody around me has such defined preconceived ideas of what they want for there next car. I tend to just buy them when a good one comes up for sale.

The criteria seems to be 'estate car' (for hauling around all the sh!te small offspring seem to need these days) and 'it works' - the V50 failed on one of those criteria. There'll be something along sooner or later, meanwhile, he'll not be using my car! the bootspace is firmly reserved for the dogs. Part of the deal was I was going to use it whilst mine was in 'dry dock' for wheelarch welding, now I'll just have to do it piecemeal.

I like an estate car myself - I like them better than MPV type things and the rash of baby wanna be 4x4 things availiable nowadays. ---------- This will make you laugh - for an experiment - I went on VW's website and had a go at "building a car".
1500cc petrol Passat estate R line with all the extras - bright blue paint - 7speed DSG box and kept clicking - sunroof - heated seats and a few more extras.
Came to over £52k - unreal I know.

Another thing - that shocked me was how few engine options and body shapes they selling now. Range is small - even for a big maker like VAG. No two door or four door options for smaller cars - they really cutting factory options/costs now. --------- Are a lot of the extras fitted in dealership with a new car?
