As with most things, 'it depends'.... Most cars are delivered hand-to-mouth now but pre-covid, if there was a dealer-fit option for extras, we'd do that in preference to ordering a factory build - JLR were very good at offering dealer fit options, most VWG dealer fit stuff is limited to software unlocks or accessories you could fit yourself.
The other side is most extra's are integrated into the vehicles software (cameras, tow electrics etc.) so they're a PITA to fit pre-delivery as we only get warranty times (max 0.5h) for a software update to multiple modules, even though it takes an hour or more to complete.

I did similar on the LR website, 'creating' a Defender I'd like - came to £72k, looks pretty good value compare to yours I still have my Grenadier build on this PC. Whole lot came to 67k, and that was even when I started with a basic platform. The options list is much more comprehensive on one of these than with LR, and the end-price proves this!
One thing I like about the Grenadier build-up is that you can get some fairly comprehensive "packages" of several options put-together. That means, if you want better tyres that suit offroading, you can get a whole load of options that all suit the "rugged & offroading" theme, most of which are ones that you would want anyway.

I suppose a lot of it is what you expect 'as standard' or want as 'extras', the advantage of extras is you can choose which you want, rather than have standard features you're not interested in - but a lot of extras have 'you need to have this' precursors - a simple example would be you need rear PDC to have front PDC. Either way, you're paying for it.

Just been looking at these - not really looked into - at a Grenadier before. They use 3.0 six cylinder BMW engines. Petrol or diesel - only come in LWB. Interesting - they about £76k now - just did "online build".

A lad in the village has gone for one, replacing a last of the line traditional Defender 110
Lets just say that neither vehicle seems to do much hard work!

Few do - they've always been 'aspirational' vehicles. Of all the vehicles I took across North Africa, none of the Defender drivers were first owners, most of the Discovery 3 & 4's were.

For £1500 car
Which is now banger money
I would have just “ lived with the hesitation “

Right up until it gave up. I was considering it TBH, not knowing how long it'd been like this for and there being two cylinders down on compression - and I know myself so I couldn't live with it meant the most cost-effective option for me was to move on. Yes, it's banger money - but you can get a banger for that money that doesn't have engine issues.

I did similar on the LR website, 'creating' a Defender I'd like - came to £72k, looks pretty good value compare to yours What supprised me was how the extras "add up". Another thing - that shocked me was how few engine options and body shapes they selling now. Range is small - even for a big maker like VAG. No two door or four door options for smaller cars - they really cutting factory options/costs now. --------- When I was at JLR in Halewood each new build has it's own build sheet with what is on the vehicle ie bigger wheels/tyres ordered, panoramic roof, floor mats etc. If you order a car from the Manufacturers extras list they will or should be fitted at the factory when the vehicle is being made. Factory-fitted options are features or accessories that are installed by the manufacturer at the time of production. These options are installed on the assembly line and are included in the car’s original build specification. Dealer-installed options are added by the dealer before the vehicle is offered for sale. The price of these options differs from dealer to dealer and the dealership uses them to make more profit when they sell the car.
