My daughter's 2014 Astra Mk6 1.7dti has a problem with the clutch, which I believe is a dual mass clutch. The problem is that there is a burning smell when the engine is running, even on idling. The problem was reported to the main dealer who said it is still OK to use the car. Is this information correct? she relies on the car because she is a nurse and uses the car for travelling to hospitals.

Are you sure it's the clutch and not something like an oil leak on to the exhaust?

have you had the car recently serviced or anything along those lines. if there are any concerns book it into your local garage or get arnold clark to look at it as it may be covered by the warrenty.

Are you sure it's the clutch and not something like an oil leak on to the exhaust? I am pretty sure it's something to do with the clutch, it's that familiar asbestos burning smell found with a slipping clutch, although there are no apparent signs of a slipping clutch on daughter's car. I find it strange why the burning smell is even with the car stopped and just idling, perhaps it's something to do with how dual mass systems work? The car has been serviced regularly, mileage is 23K. Main dealers are indicating that if a clutch replacement is required, the warranty will not cover the work because it is wear and tear.

If she's slipped/ridden clutch the burning acrid smell will linger for ages

When the car is started the next day the smell starts after 5-10 mins and gets stronger and that is when the car is just idling.

but surely after only a maximum of 18months the clutch shouldnt be down to wear and tear. if it is the clutch, the other option is if you can find out the manufacturer of the clutch that comes as standard contact them about their policies.

Any warranty is via the seller of the vehicle, not from any of the parts suppliers.
