I said Dacia would do well when they started up again over here... I see a fair few around here...They appeal to me too... Buy one for 7 grand, get upto 10 years out of it, throw it away and buy another one.. When these hit the auctions at 3 years old the'll fetch nowt - whos going to buy a used one off a pitch when new ones are so cheap?[/quote] I wouldn't have one as a gift let alone buy one.

That's the basic idea behind Dacia. 3-5 year old Renault technology (so all the bugs ironed out) and all non-essential kit removed or made optional. The problem is, as you say, your average Focus/Golf buyer wants their reversing camera, built in satnav and climate control. I did a pdi on a Dacia sandero stepway a few weeks back it had a sat nav/touch screen/ usb etc... Plastic fantastic inside , but drove ok

People used to say that about Skodas, look at them now

I've always said there is a market for a basic car. Lots of people want a cheap car for getting to and from work and a once a year trip to the seaside without the fear of all the complicated gizmo's going wrong and costing a fortune. Some people want the latest, newest of everything, but that market is very tight at the working man's end. Its ok at the top end, but look how much value they lose. its how the jap's started here, and the koreans, and the eastern european examples. Cheap, cheerful, basic and reliable will have a good market. The only people not realising it are the mass makers who are fighting over entry level basic cars with all the gizmo's and then complaining they camt sell enough cars! Luxury they wont be, good resale they wont have, but sales? They will (and are)

They will (and are) I agree but the Dacia's still have the same stuff to go wrong as the renault/nissans there based on dpf's , various common rail maladies , etc...... It's really only the interiors and styling nicetys where money has been cut

The CityRover could have worked if MG Rover didn't take the mickey with the price. Rattle them out of the doors cheap and they'd have done well.

And safety, only 3 star for the duster Except that 3 stars by today's standards is 5-stars in the 1990's. Yes, it's possible to push for the best, but isn't that like pushing for shat-nav when a perfectly good radio-CD would have sufficed? I try to drive safely and avoid hitting other things around the car, which makes the safety scoring system a bit irrelevent for me. More so, if I want to drive dangerously, I go out in the Defender, a 1948 bit of design with no ABS, no airbags, no stability control, questionable seatbelts. The only thing it offers in the way of safety is a crumple-zone (the car that you hit).

And according to some stats from just a few years ago, the safest mainstream vehicle in the UK according to deaths/serious injuries per accident. Any series land rover driver will still think you're a Jessie though for wanting all that namby pamby safety stuff like disc brakes, a soft steering wheel and in the case of series 1 drivers; seatbelts!
