Must be overdue due a discussion on this.
Hows it going local to you ? Whats the costs to trade and retail ? What are the teasers priced at ?
Previously we had no local MOT place other than a mostly avoided franchise, then in the last few years 2 have opened on the same street.
Theres one in the next town offers them for £29 or £79 with a interim service. £25 trade £30 retail is generally the indy rate.
Further out towards the cities some do ask £35-full price although the fast-fit rate seems to be permanently on offer at £30.

I pay £40 trade and a full retest..He charges £45 to the public and is always fully booked.
Some of the fast shits charge £30, but then £15 for a re-test.

The local MOT place I use charges £40 no fee for re-test... Generally a busy place when I ring up or a time..

My local garage is still 45 retail and 35 trade, both with a free retest, and the garage has always been busy, but they had a change of tester last month, and can now usually get you in the same day, as many of the regulars followed the old tester to his new garage
In work theyve got a big sign on the pavement outside. One side boasts "half price mot test" the other side "tester wanted" if there's a tester in bristol who is interested, pm me for details...

Thats an interesting point about following the tester, does happen round here, usually due to having a good understanding and becoming matey over time.
Probably goes without saying theres instances where folk swap stations and leave many thousands on account to be paid in dribbles. Personally I find it outrageous but there seems no shortage of takers for their business.
Curiously even garages that have been stung like this themselves seem happy to take them on, starts off: cash......end of week.........cheque............end of month..........once a blue moon.........only when asked..........bye.

personally i find it a bit awkward, being mates with both the tester and the guy who owns the garage. whichever one i stop giving business to is going to ask why :/

Just a quick word of caution about Mr Cheque-bouncing-chancer being giving the best rates and service while Mr Cash-paying-never-complains gets it up the arris.
Its a misconceived practice founded on the fear that Mr Cheque will otherwise b*gger off without settling up..............then Mr Cash clears off as well to a garage that collects only good customers and keeps them.

i pay 35 trade, this is to the mot garage on my estate. they charge 45 retail, both have free 14 day retest. they work very well with me in that i have a big say in wether a car passes or fails. i also found out recently that they wernt bothering to check my work on retests because"weve never had a problem with your repairs" i was shocked because all this time i thought someone was going over what ive done and spotted any potential problems!! the other mot place on the main road charges 30 trade even for class 7 and 35 retail,i had to stop using him cos he kept passing everything, sometimes dangerous things were overlooked,he uses a trainee to check the vehicle but somebody else would sign it!!!!he would often drive back with a vt30 and vt20 together!! another place a bit further i used to use a lot charges 30 trade and 35 retail, they are a lot more difficault to get to and are quite strict about what they pass and fail, they also check everything that has failed whch can become quite a bore sometimes. a place not far from me got busted by the bowler hatters recently, apparantly they were watching outside while monitering whats gets logged on or off,9 went in and out,35 were logged on and off i dont know what sort of time period it was for,the tester got a 5 year ban and the garage lost its licence, thye are appealing against it.

£30 trade, £44 to the public, retests are free within 10 working days. been using the same garage for nearly 10 years, the place is 10 miles away but i know what i get, i know i can trust them because they dont get any of the repair work from me so i know its a fair test without them taking the p*ss.
local garages near to me charge around the same, but i have heard that a few have refused to release some cars because they say they are not road worthy and bully the customers into letting them do the work, which they then take the p*ss.

£40 to whoever walks through the door..
Kwik fit is at other end of car park and charges £37.50 plus retest fee. By the book is an understatement
