Throw the spring clips away, the factors will have strong mini cable ties in stock cos everyone wants to use them instead. Some places are peddling bigger floppy oversize boots for easier fitting but that causes problems securing them in any worthwhile fashion. A pass is a pass but wouldn't wouldn't want to fit them on your own motor. IMO a snug boot and mini cable ties is best. Whip round the boot edge with a little blunt screwdriver then give the cable ties a mild pull. Very quick, sealed and secure. As you say, depends on the variables, if their pockets will stand it quote for full new components, or take it to the extreme and quote for a swap against somthing on the pitch. Doesn't take many fails to make a swap viable these days, couple of tyres, BJs, set of brakes, top it off with a service and new exhaust............yes madam, a straight swap, nothing to pay, drive away today, your 2006 30k Clio for my 2001 80k Proton Persona...........fit a CD player ? will you swap if I say yes ? come inside, lets get your name on it, theres been a lot of interest in that. A few MOT repairs can up to a written off car these days!
