To our mot testers ! If a balljoint boot has a small pin hole that grease comes out only when squeezed and only a little, is this a fail or pass and advise ? Thanks for any answers

I say a tiny nick/cut/split and I pass
If the boot is clearly hanging of ie after someone's butchered it with a splitter fork etc... Then it's a fail
The wording is it bit crap tbh
" Doesn't prevent the ingress of dirt "
So a tiny cut is acceptable to me

This strikes me as a very odd new rule. Surely the idea of the MOT it to test whether a vehicle is road worthy at the time of testing. You could have a rubber gaiter ripped to buggery but the joint itself may be fine. OK, it may be more prone to wear if the gaiter is damaged but that's going to be very dependent on how much and what type of use the vehicle gets. You can't predict it any more than you can predict how long a half worn set of brake pads is likely to last.
With regards to the question, I'd have thought a pin hole would be ok - if you squeeze most of them hard enough they will leak grease from their ends as they aren't completely sealed, so I can't see how a pinhole is any worse.

Oli yes and it is getting mis interpreted, the tester has to use his discretion to decide if it will allow ingress of dirt to an extent it will cause premature wear. Mr Benz summed it up well

Grey area this one!
I have to agree with all comments on this subject made by everyone!
Yes... "Dirt ingress" is the wording.
Hold this thought! The MOT pass for a car is the minimum standard required for use on the roads of this country!
My feeling is... There is too much pass and advise!
Also... And I will get shot for this, even thou we do testing, I thing in 1960 when testing was introduced it was a mistake to farm it out to the repair trade. I have always thought the job was best in the hands of government testing stations.
It is a brave statement...
I believe we are only one in two countries in Europe who do it this way!
I am not sure if we could ever back track from this now.
