My faithful old K plate Astra, 160k on clock now, passed on Sat with no advisories. I did go over it first and had to weld a small plate in drivers side wheel arch (first welding this things had) and replace rear shoes as although new last year one had delaminated most of the way round!
It really does amaze me, this thing has original Cat and 02 sensor, all original balljoints, bushes and bearings - only thing ever changed is CV gaitors. How much longer can this go on? ;D

On your next oil change don't pour it down the drain
But recycle it by spraying into the box sections and chassis and it will last forever

Bees-knees in its day was the Astra F, simple and reliable, and very stylish. They would last for ever if the underside had been Dinitrolled from new.
Years ago I run round in a beautiful low mileage 1.7D 5 dr Merit for a while, no turbo but it was lovely to drive, lovely on the motorway as well. More desirable than a hour on Beyonces teets.
Theres no stopping progress...........Astra H 1.3 CDTi............jesus wept...........

I miss my old j plate SI. That got scrapped nearly 10 years ago, and had already had loads of welding. Handbrake mount needed welding when it was only 5 years old due to stress cracks

I think one of the reasons this has lasted so well is I waxoyled it all when I got it, hence no welding underneath and even original steel brake pipes. The only reason I had to weld it this year was I ignored a rust scab on inner arch where the original stonechip had been damaged and as they do it rusted away under the coating. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, it has never broken down in its life. It only ever came home once on a lowloader when I ran over something on the motorway which took out BOTH nearside tyres at same time - can't blame the car for that! Had to do far more on wifeys T plate Astra which seems a much worse design, silly electric steering, can't believe you have to remove the rear cluster from the car to change a bulb ffs!
