Today I have booked my VW Tiguan 1.5 TSI Evo Match in for an MOT for next Friday morning (3rd May). Whilst I was their I also mentioned to them that it was due a Service in 49 days according to the info in the onboard computer system. I also mentioned it will be five years old in the middle of May so could he sort me out a cambelt change as it's due at 5 years or 60k miles which ever comes first. His reply was no I can't and VW have changed the cambelt schedules on your engine to 15 years or 150k miles whichever comes first. "Your winding me up," I said. No I'm not ask VW and anyway the cambelt timing gear for these engines is expensive and I can't warrant buying the kit to do them. Apparently it's to fall in line with the rest of Europe I understand so what do you chaps in the garage trade think about this? So of you may know some may not and I for one had no idea. Lost touch. Call me old fashioned or whatever but I'm not having a 15 year or 150k miles interval between cambelt changes your asking for trouble. The kit I'm going to my local VW main dealer on Tuesday and have a word or three with somebody in the Service side and find out why it's been changed and the like. Can one of you chaps tell me if the cambelt tensioner is plastic or metal?

I’m sure some vw have gone to a longer interval
ford wet belt on panther ( ecoblue ) have dropped to 6 years 100,000 miles
Still a bit optimistic at that 😂😂😂😂

5years / 60k miles would have been too soon, IMHO....
Unless a manufacturer has a serious problem with an engine, they will always go the 10years / 120k sort of schedule these days. That's the default position on most of these timing systems. If you cannot make an engine last that long between changes, you're in the wrong business...
To put this into context, VW (and hence Volvo) recommend 3years intervals for the belts on both ends of my Volvo V70 TDI from 1998. The reason for that is that they were still "playing it safe" in those days, but also the pump hangs off the back of the camshaft (not the front) and therefore the torsional stresses in the front belt are much worse than they would otherwise be. This is the reason the Rover / Landrover L-series engines have a short interval as well. It's a c**p bit of design, and fortunately one that the designers "got out of their systems" fairly quickly once they realised what a compromise it made for the calibration Engineers.

Yes the timing kit was expensive on one of the VAG Engines but has come down now I’m told Garage on the same estate got the Laser kit - LAS8824 for the 1.5TSi engines - Brought from Euros @ £600 ish. There is also an add on kit LAS8866 to do the 1.2TSi - which is about £185 - they not got this extra. It just clamps the cams - no need to set up with electronics. ------ To be honest - I was thinking of stripping a 1.5TSi if I had one long enough and making the "cam clamp" thing up. But now I can borrow the kit.
AutoData got these at Fixed interval service Timing belt Every 200000 miles or 180 months Longlife service Timing belt Every 200000 miles or 180 months ----------- Haynes got no service intervals (just checking) Engine * Renew the timing belt(s) (No recommended period) Check the condition of the timing belt; renew if damaged (first check at 200,000 miles/180 months; then every 12 months) * Renew the timing belt tensioner (No recommended period)

Your car, if you want it done, ask them to do it.

Your car, if you want it done, ask them to do it. Well an update on this for you. I went to my local VW dealer and asked about the cambelt on my 1.5 TSI engine and it's 150k miles or 15 years whichever comes first diesels are 100k miles or 10 years whichever comes first. I ask why so long and couldn't get a straight answer (about as much use as a chocolate fireguard IMO) I ask if a customer requested a cambelt change how much it would be Anyway I've declined as mines only low mileage and passed the MOT today.

My garage won't do it but with the vehicle being low mileage I'm going to leave it for a while and may be change it in a year or three if I'm still around.
