My MK2 Focus with rear drums has developed a rather confusing fault over the last week or so
Sometimes when braking at low speed the rear left drum brake will "grab" and lock up the wheel when you apply the brakes but then is fine once you release pedal pressure (i.e it either has full brakes or no brakes with no progression). It doesn't seem to be dragging or holding otherwise, and the recent MOT (two weeks ago) didn't mention any rear brake imbalance.
What kind of fault could be causing this? I fitted new brake shoes and springs etc about a year ago, but only gave the drums a clean up as hadn't ordered any new ones and they still looked serviceable then. My plan is to take the drum off and inspect everything, but is there anything I should pay particular attention to?

Does the car have ABS brakes?
My first thought is that all or part of the lining has come off the brake-shoe.

Yes it has ABS, that doesn't seem to be activating when the issue happens so I don't think its that. I think you might be right regarding the brake shoes, however the last time that happened on my MK1 Focus the pedal went to the floor and it hasn't done so this time.

Broken shoe lining is the most likely thing. Just have to get the drum off pronto and go right through it

ABS sensor broken / water ingress?
Could be either side?
If one side is grabbing the car will rear steer?

ABS sensor broken / water ingress? Could be either side? If one side is grabbing the car will rear steer? It only seems to do it if the wheel is lightly loaded at slow speed (e.g. braking down hill in car park). My personal thought is that one of the drums has flaked some scale off and jammed something up, but either way it looks like its drums off and take a peek. Seems the shoes I put in "recently" was about two years ago, so plenty of time for a problem to develop or the drums to go from "OK" to "needs changing".

I had a go at taking the offending brake drum off last night, and it seems the problem may have been down to a bit of a lip on the brake drum, as the drum didn't want to come off over the shoes and instead brought them with along for the ride!
Unfortunately the adjuster strut got damaged in the process, however being the hoarder I am I had a spare in the garage. The wheel cylinder and shoes looked OK so I dressed the drum a bit and it seems to be happier with life at the moment.
