Trouble is induction heaters are still pricey, way too pricey for a keen DIYer for occasional use Plus heat and fibreglass isn't a good mix. I'm fortunate that we have one that I can borrow it's a Stanners i4 water cooled single phase unit heat placed exactly where you want it. but to be honest that is what you need. Bet that's cheap! Can you lend it to Spud?

I have used a few hand held ones - they not a lot of good really. ------------ But to be honest - I am heating less and less things up of late - most things you can muller about with a grinder on modern cars.

But looking at givusaclue 's purchase - when it comes to induction heaters - I would agree - it is "go big or go home"...

Insurance!!!!!! Lot of people are struggling with cover for "open flame heaters" - and welding/cutting. They now asking for % of hot work for premium quote. This is why - I am doing so much "tin bashing" of late - big chain repairers have pulled the plug on MOT patching. No welding in the last hour - has always been the rule.

I cannot fault my cheap, Chinesium induction heater. I think it cost around £140 a couple of years ago.
Yes, it's c**p, but it does what I need; I get in there, get about 90secs total (in 3x 30secs bursts) before it needs to serious cool-down for a few minutes.
Thing is - it has never failed to heat-up what I need to release, and I don't have to worry about shorting the coils out - I just buy another one......and I'm still on my first.
You can get a lot of beer for (£2500 - £140) which is approx. £2300 of utter drunkeness.......

I've used my Plasma cutter to heat things up with good results, turned down really low and kept moving. It's not typical dealer equipment I admit, but they're quite happy with us using all kinds of stuff that at some places would have the h&s bloke in a fit!

I often use a lift arc TIG set for heating up bolts and fixing - pull the arc away enuf so you don't melt the hex on the fixing.

That works too - but I'm not taking my TIG set into work, it's bad enough with the 'can you just's I get as homework! the current favourite is welding O2/NOx sensor bosses onto exhausts after the Neanderthals have mangled the existing one... On top of which, they'd no doubt think it's OK to go in over the weekend to 'do some welding', leaving me with a metric f*cktonne of tungstens to regrind and an empty Argon bottle.
