MGB running rough, air being drawn through the throttle spindles, question has anyone just replaced the spindles to rectify the problem or is it refurbished carb time. replacement spindles £20 each refurb carb by Burlens £250 each I intend to strip them monday and have a good look.

IIRC the spindles on those run in a bush so you might get away with just changing the bush

Yup, agree, a re bush is the usual course….
Not quite a diy job as the holes need line boring to ensure the spindle alignment is maintained….

As above - rebush them, if the spindles are at all worn or look rough where they pass through the bushings, replace them as well. once the bushes are fitted, put your thumb under one of them, fill with engine oil and put your index finger over it, then squeeze hard for 30 seconds or so - that will force oil into the bush to increase the lubrication and it's longevity

Yup, agree, a re bush is the usual course…. Not quite a diy job as the holes need line boring to ensure the spindle alignment is maintained…. Agree with this mainly- but I would say it is doable DIY depending on experience. I did the ones on the MGB GT I’ve just finished in the Projects thread, this is what I did. 1. Mounted the old spindle in my bench drill then put the carb body on the spindle- this enabled me to clamp up the body on the drill table knowing it was perfectly aligned. Then remove old spindle. 2 Use a spare piece of material to test drill holes in to find the perfect size for the bushes to be a tight press fit. Sorry I don’t know the size I ended up with- I think it was either a BA or imperial size, def not metric. 3. Now use said drill to drill out carb body- the trick is to ensure the drill bit you use is long enough to go right through both sides in one go, not drill from each side- this ensures it is all aligned. 4. To fit the bushes I cut a piece of old spindle and welded an M8 nut on the end to make a mandrel that was a perfect fit in the bush and eased them in with the vice. Mine turned out really well, move freely with no play and engine runs great. Hope this helps. HOWEVER- I strongly suggest checking everything else first- compression, valve clearances, ignition system etc before condemning the carbs. It is my experience these B-series engines are very forgiving of a little spindle wear and a small mixture tweak will compensate, so be sure it is serious wear and nothing else is the cause before you go to all this effort. I only did mine as it was part of the full rebuild and I tend towards OCD with my classics!

Engine wise everything is spot on, spray brake cleaner on the spindles and revs rise, will take one off today to have a look. we have an engineering shop, so it would be a simple job to do, I will see what they want to do.

They are going down the route of a re-bushing kit, so I will keep you updated on the running and performance after the surgery.
