Thinking about something a bit more luxurious next car, maybe a CLS Estate 2016-18... after a life of econoboxes. I'm not rich though , potential money pit? Tons of electronic tech to go wrong, collision avoidance, air suspension, etc. I'd imagine replacing a headlamp unit or wing mirror isn't a matter of handing £150 to ECP, more like add a zero and only genuine parts available? I'll probably snap out of it and I haven't got the ££ right now anyway, but OTOH I might just throw caution to the wind, you only live once right? What to watch out for?

Don't buy a V6 diesel - I been writting huge bills out for oil leaks from oil cooler in Vbase and rear main seals on autos of late.

In light of Remmingtons comments, how about a Beamer or Audi…? Both do estate versions….
personally I’d go Audi, though I have a bit of a penchant for VAG cars having had 2….
My neighbour behind us has a BMW 530, 63 plate, nowt but trouble with the brakes at the front….been a money pit..still not right despite doing all the work himself.

Ask me if I would buy myself a BMW/Audi/Merc...? The answer is no... I personally drive two VW's and Skoda.... (low spec - easy and cheap to repair stuff). My workshop is full of BMW's daily - and I am writting big bills for them daily and I don't want big bills for myself.

Nah, was thinking of the 220D 2.1
Don't like Audis I'm afraid. Had considered 5 series touring, E class estate
well, words of wisdom, but can't face another mundane wagon!

I got a VW passat estate - Highline DSG - nice car to drive. I always used to have Eclass estates for years (decades). Plus loads of Vovlo estates. But I reckon the VW is the best car I have owned as yet.

I had Passat on the shortlist a while ago, praps I should look again! 2.0 diesel, manual I guess? Heard bad things about the DSG box, but they're much more common than manuals. Or are they ok?

I’m on my second Skoda Octavia with DSG. First one was a 2005 and current one is a 2012. I think my first one had wet clutches and the second one has dry clutches, but I could be mistaken.
Ours have been trouble free and I love the gearboxes.
If you look hard enough there are horror stories about every make and model of car. I don’t think the VAG DSG is significantly less robust than anything else out there.

We rebuild these 6/7 speed DSG boxes in house at my workshop. 6speed is allot better box (tougher). I got a 2.0 TSi DSG passat estate in the yard - customers - took it for roadtest today. Nice powerfull car to drive (weak engines thou - these TSi engines suffer with piston issues).
