My nephew has a 2018 Grandland X which needs an outer CV boot, driver's side.
Does the CV joint come of the shaft to allow the boot to be fitted ?
Don't have much dealings with 'newer' cars so need some advice before I take it on. TIA.

Sure I did one recently and it did come off, but then was a twunt to go back on.

Thanks for replies  . Stretchy boot might be the best option then - have used them before (borrowed the expanding tool). |

If you can't get a 'stretchy boot' & stretcher, I find that taking the snap ring off, closing it up and refitting (assuming there isn't a new one in the kit) helps - and taking the driveshaft out to do the job on a bench saves more than the time taken (and frustration *2) to get it on the bench rather than trying to do it in situ.

I've never used one of those stretchy air powered tools, always used a cone, soaked in furniture polish |

I've never used one of those stretchy air powered tools, always used a cone, soaked in furniture polish Once you have used an air-powered stretchy tool, you'll never go back! I used to hate this sort of job, now I just "mildly avoid" them....... I don't mind a CV boot to do - stretchy air powered jobby the way to go. I got one of the green cone things - but I am not man enough to get the boot over it. Silicon spray of furniture polish is a good tip thou. Only one I avoid now are tripoid inner boots (if I have described them properly). As these have to be done to the book. Have a job to buy these inner boots now - with three hard rubber lumps on them - think rest of the trade just goes for an exchange driveshaft if this type of inner needs doing. |

Just fit the shaft, get on with life..... Most VW's are bolt on driveshafts - right spline bit and a 3/8 impact wrench/ right choice of extension and they are soon off and on. (no gear oil issues). |

Have used the stretchy boot a few times - a friend in the trade lends me the expanding tool and keeps a few boots in stock. I have to say they are a great idea.
Used the cone a few times but it was always a struggle.
And having picked up the boot today from the motor factors it seems very stiff and rigid - can't imagine it lasting very long due to this.
