We got a user Yaris 2010 model 1350cc around 100hp with around 100k km. The mechanics that did a preliminary check said everything mechanical was working great.
We drove for about a month in the city just fine, then we made our first trip. I don't know if this is relevant, but the car's transmission has 6 gears. So in this trip it was the first time we had to use 5th and 6th gear. For economy, we were driving around 2500 rpm @ 6th gear for most of the distance where the road wasn't uphill.
After that, one day we notice during an uphill start that the car feels like "someone is pulling from behind". We take it to a mechanic who drives around and says all is fine. We continue to see this behavior on and off, car doesn't really accelerate and sometimes have to change to 1st gear uphill. For comparison I have a similar Clio that has no problem accelerating in the same uphill road with 2nd gear.
We did electronic diagnostics and nothing showed. The feeling we get while this happens is exactly like someone is pulling the car from behind even if the gas pedal is fully pressed.
Edit: The car runs on petrol.

Doesn’t add up…
Why would you do a diagnostic check if no eml light on?…. You say you performed a diag test, what equipment was used?
Is this car petrol or diesel?

We went to a manufacturer's service station just in case something showed in the diagnostics. The only thing that came up is that the battery should be changed after a few months. |

The first thing you should do is get the car in for a really good service - not a check-over or "health-check" or anything else - a really good 24month/2year service, with all the filters and oils changed.
As a basis for making any sort of diagnosis on a car, a good, full service is the starting-point. There are innumerable things that can be improved by just running clean oil in the engine, for a start, but beyond that, clean filters will obviate any risk of fuel-starvation through blocked filtration (modern high-ethanol fuel is awful for dislodging debris in fuel systems) and induction system blockage.
Too many garages will fob you off with a minimum-standard service - it isn't good enough if you don't know the car, and how well it has been treated before you bought it. It might seem like money wasted, but you will waste even more by not doing this first. Find a good independant outfit, and explain you need a full service with all the filters and oils.

Welcome to the Forum.  This is a UK based Forum and your written English isn't to bad. It needs looking at so take it to a garage that you trust and get it properly checked out mechanically. It could be that the brakes are binding but needs a proper check over and as valhalla mentions a proper Full Service. A twelve year old vehicle with a 100kms is around 62000 UK miles. What sort of service history does this vehicle have and how long have you owned it?  |

Very possible, or as Nob said, brakes…, Well the op did say that the car has been checked mechanically and all was good… and…..” we drove for about a month in the city just fine….” Hmmm….yeah. Until the car has been properly serviced and checked over thoroughly we not going to know….assuming the op reports back…. There’s just too many unknowns…… brake binding/clutch issues/engine performance, crap fuel….….proverbial loose nut 🤣 |

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will get back to you about the service once we've done it.
I have also thought about the clutch. We've been suggested to drive the car at high RPMs in case it is a clogging issue.
Could it have something to do with old oil?

Do the engine revs climb higher than expected when the fault occurs?
If you cannot replicate the customer complaint any repairs are just a guess.
Get the mechanic to simulate the exact same driving conditions on a hill at whatever speed and gear is appropriate

Get the mechanic to simulate the exact same driving conditions on a hill at whatever speed and gear is appropriate Not that I have seen. While I increase pressure on the gas pedal, the rpms don't seem to increase, the speed doesn't either and there is louder noise (kinda growling) coming from the engine. Sometimes it even comes to deceleration and having to shift to lower gear. |

Sounds like a clutch issue, assuming it’s not an auto box….,,
Try this,
With the car engine running, handbrake on, select 3rd gear, gradually lift off the clutch pedal.( stay off the gas pedal! )
Hopefully the car will stall, if it doesn’t and the engine revs stay around the same, the clutch is slipping…,

I’d be looking for an air leak between MAF and engine, main air intake, pcv, breathers or servo vacuum etc

Sometimes it even comes to deceleration and having to shift to lower gear. If the RPMs don’t increase when you put your foot on the throttle, it’s unlikely to be the clutch. My initial thoughts was brakes binding, but upkeep might be onto something with the exhaust. At the risk of saying something daft - and I don’t know the vehicle’s characteristics- but is it one of these vehicles with a fairly peaky torque curve that you have to rev a bit? As you moved from town driving and started using the higher gears, have you got used to trundling round at tickover and forgotten it needs some reving? I’m certainly guilty of this when I borrow my wife’s car! Oli |

I’d be looking for an air leak between MAF and engine, main air intake, pcv, breathers or servo vacuum etc I'm very prone to think this is possibly the culprit as a friend mechanic also said he has seen a few Yaris cars having issues with dirty MAF or whatnot. |
