A Ford Focus 1.8 on a 57 plate. It seems that the blower motor only works on numbers 3 and 4 nothing on 1 and 2. Am I correct in assuming these have a resistor pack type thing which can blow or fail hence the above problem? Do the have one or two resistors for the blower or just the one and whereabouts are they? The car is a mates and atm he's in Bonny Scotland with his Mrs. Not due home till weekend.

Quick google brings up this thread www.focusfanatics.com/threads/mk2-focus-resistor-pack-location.308819/Seems a reasonably straightforward job. The glovebox on the MK2 is held in with some torx screws and should slide out reasonably easily. The fusebox/GEM unit/ECU underneath can be unhooked from its bracket but from the looks of it you shouldn't need to do that.

Cheers rhyds I'll mention it to him when he gets home. Personally never done one of these. I'll try and find out how much these packs are from Fords as there's a Ford Warehouse on the Industrial estate at the back of our estate. Any ideas how much they are?

I looked on eBay…..pattern parts are around £10-12……gen Ford ones second hand fetch £20 or so ….so expect to pay ££££…… If he’s complaining about being cold in the car, a gallon of 4 star and a box of Swanns will help….😂😂😂

I've never changed one so I'm not sure. As they're basically just a resistor pack I'd imagine there's no real bonus to getting a Ford OE one other than possible longer life.

One plug, two 7mm screws, takes about 10 mins to change, just don't do it with a hangover otherwise it's not just the screws that get all spinny.... It's 'just' a resistor pack mounted on the side of the heater box, the airflow through the heater box also cools it, which is why the lower speeds burn out first - speed 4 is essentially 'bypass'.

Diagnosis - if fan works on speed four only "its the resistor pack" If fan does not work on lower speeds - it may be a "tight or failing blower motor". ------------ Resistor drops the voltage to fan (so thus the speed drops). Fan might just not be able to work at low speed/voltages. Resistor is simple enough to test with a multimeter.
