Hi everyone, well, as the title suggests, I'm not new to the trade - although I was out of it from the early 90's to 2008 - sort of.. I still got dragged into 'having a look' at stuff... Currently working as a Diag. Tech. at a MB dealer, previously (in no particular order) Vehicle Sparky, RAC, Ford, Citroen, Volvo, Land Rover & Audi plus a few years self-employed which was great, until the ex. took all the zeroes out of the bank account...
Reason I joined? - another forum I'm on doesn't really get the mindset of dealer or indy Tech's, so start clutching their pearls when the driver is suggested to be part of the problem!
The username - The filterspinners get told to 'ask the old git in the corner' when they have a problem (usually a stripped thread in a NOx sensor port or a broken stud), As a Yorkshireman working in the East Mids, it's a moniker I'm happy with.

Welcome, as my moniker suggests I'm not in the trade, never have been, just a tinkerer, tight wad (Nobs taught me everything he knows ) with a VAG dependancy - I'm a bit of a hoarder

Cheers Everyone! remmington - we've had conversations on another site the car-based ones I've been on are mainly LR themed ones.
Today's 'highlights' - a 70 plate Diesel E class with an engine bay fire, caused by just enough petrol in the tank to bring the exhaust temperature up to the point where things started melting, mainly wiring insulation.... The owner was properly kicking off about 'risk to life' etc., going to the papers and 'social media' until we pulled the history of warnings from the instrument pack and showed that he'd cleared DTC's before it was brought in, strangely silent after that and was politely asking if we could provide a repair cost he could approach his ins. co. with... Then onto (another) OM654 with knackered needle roller bearings in the cam followers, strangely this one didn't have a beaded seat cover or HA mileage! But it's Friday so time to take the dogs out, then beer O'clock

Hello Oldgit, I'm a fellow Yorkshireman and an RAC patrol (17th year of service) 👍 Hi mate, I only did four years before being tempted away to an entirely different career after being seconded to the CARS team for eight months or so - I ended up working across Africa, middle and far east as well as most of Europe for about twelve years before coming back to 'the spanners'.
I did enjoy working for the RAC - mostly - but that was at a time before they became a full-on business. Unlike most tech's, I don't mind explaining stuff to the drivers, I think that is mainly due to my time working roadside where there wasn't a service receptionist, err.... 'advisor' to hide behind...

I've done a few secondments with technical training and CSC, worked as a Lead Patrol for ten years, it's always changing but the core patrol job is always there waiting when you get fed up. I quite enjoy just fixing cars and doing rescue work to be honest, it's what I signed up for, never really enjoyed the paperwork or politics 🤐

It was the awful experiences on these sorts of sites that drove me onto this one, so you are not alone in that! Welcome to (relative) sanity......

If I wanted sanity, I wouldn't have come back to this job! For all it's frustrations and oddities, there's comfort in knowing you're 'not the only one' to be suffering the same faults, customers and parts-monkey issues, I think it's one of the few remaining jobs where it's OK to be very male - and that includes the women! And yes, it seems quite refreshing on here compared to some of the rivet-counters on the LR sites
