I've got a few small home/diy user jacks that i've had for about 40 years, they have served me well, but they are just about knackered now, can't remember what make they are, as the name/ labels have long rubbed away, But,I got one of these last year www.sgs-engineering.com/tj2-5lp-low-profile-garage-trolley-jack. Good sturdy jack, but didn't realise how much the thing weighed until i saw the delivery bloke struggling to carry it up the driveway. I will probably only use it at home due to the weight, & get another smaller jack for when i go out on jobs !

A word of caution about the sgs Jack's...
We had a spree of the low profile ones and ended up having to redo the seals every few months on a few of them because sgs will just send you a seal kit and consider that warrantied even brand new and out of the box you could jack up a car to remove a wheel and by the time you've changed and balanced the tyre the jack has lowered the car enough to need a few pumps to get the wheel back on... Didn't trust them and eventually they all wound in the scrap metal pile
That said they do a 1.5t high lift jack which has been epic
Our oldest jack that just will not die is a 3T halfords jack which gets used on mobile jobs and out in the car park

SGS are still a rare breed because they are actually a helpful company and we have plenty of other stuff from them like engine cranes and stands and stuff and their customer service is excellent plus delivery times are eye wateringly fast! Would definitely recommend the below... But its not low entry www.sgs-engineering.com/tjh15-professional-long-chassis-trolley-jack

We've got Blue Point ones with nylon wheels from the van - cost £150 +Vat each. Really good and service kits carried by the Snap On man Paint sprayer opposite has four of these "blue" coloured bluepoint ones - they have been very good! The are sometimes in the sale phamflet the snap on van driver gives out.

Please…. My two tj’s have given up…both rated for about a ton and half…general car use… Any to avoid? Any good buys? what brand are they? It's usually the oil seal that sits in the rod when you push the handle down.

One was a Clarke brand, not many years old, had little use....The other was Testrite, had that since I got married (if not before....) that was my go to tj... Both gone now so not repairable...by me anyway..

Following the advice on this thread I decided that it was high time I invested in a decent jack, and went for the 2.5 Ton SGS low entry unit.
I ordered it yesterday afternoon and was with me by lunchtime, which was pretty impressive given that delivery was included in the price.
The size and weight of the jack make it a home/workshop use only tool, definitely not something you want to haul about, but it seems very solidly made, has a rubber pad for the very generous jacking pad and the 2.5 Ton capacity is enough to lift my focus almost twice over, so hopefully it'll do the job.
