End of both thumbs sore now - split and bleeding. So going for : pr88 barrier cream and gloves in the day time. And copious amounts of O'Keefes working hands - hand cream in the evenings! "Horse bolted - stable door" comes to mind!

My father used to swear by The Body Shop hemp hand cream when he was working My Doctor years ago - Dr Baker (long retired - real decent chap) Told me the best thing ever for splits on your hands - is the ear wax than comes out of your own ears! I kid you not!

The guys on the engine testbeds used to swear by the following "trick" to fix their hands overnight each time (lots of nasty diesel oil + dust throughout the day);
Take a pair of Marigold gloves. Fill them with warmed-up unsalted butter, 1/4 pack in each. Place glove over hand and work the butter into the fingers. Try to go to sleep (if the Mrs. will let you - the Marigolds are probably driving her wild by now..... ), and let the butter do its thing. In the morning, wash hands in soft-soap to remove any excess - the butter will be grey with oil and grime by now, having brought all the unnatural oils out, and fed some natural oils in.
A pack of butter was reckoned to be cheap compared with other remedial treatments.....and it is probably nicer than ear-wax!
