Mig welding - "gasless" - Is no good at all. I have tried it - it is too hot/dirty. Too much splatter - more holes than actual fused welding.
You want 0.6mm A18 wire in Co2 - 0.8mm A18 wire in 5% Co2/AR mix.
They do use flux cored wire at high amps over (220amps) - spray transfer with shielding gas on really heavy stuff - like shipbuilding. It is what it was designed for.

I’d have thought the arc welder would be ideal for thicker chassis steel?

I’d have thought the arc welder would be ideal for thicker chassis steel? I strugle with 2.5mm 6013's on chassis work (they just run everywhere). I tend to use - fast freeze pipe welding rods - 6010's/6011's - for this type of job. But you are gonna need a DC MMA (arc welder) - with a high OCV - open circuit voltage - to run these (keep them alight)! Everybody uses a MIG welder for automotive repair work for a reason!

Arc welders = Farmers and Shipbuilders I use an Arc welder allot - but we are repairing plant/diggers/heavy mechinery... MMA arc welding does have it place/it's uses - but you do need to be dealing with 2.5/3.2mm + base metal... Plus to be honest - MIG welding is just like a "glue gun" it is an easier process to ennact...

Arc welders = Farmers and Shipbuilders My father was Forman welder at the local pit, he had an Oxford oil cooled welder at home. 2” angle and 1/4” plate was his his preferred medium, it was only in later life he had an angle grinder, everything prior was hacksaw

My father was Forman welder at the local pit, he had an Oxford oil cooled welder at home. 2” angle and 1/4” plate was his his preferred medium, it was only in later life he had an angle grinder, everything prior was hacksaw My Father was an agricutural engineer - he had a set of bottles - OXY/Acetylene - he used to cut things up - with a gas axe and gas weld them together - with huge size nozzles... (he taught me to weld!)Aged 90 - he is still alive - he sits in a chair talking sh#te (it is heart breaking to watch). Been there from lunchtime today - Mum is at the "end of her tether" - loosing her patience with the man she has been married to for 70 years. I have made a bed up in the single bedroom - staying there tonight. Done a few jobs for Mother. My Wife and Sister in law - have been there all day - cooking food/cleaning/shopping... (they have gone home now). Dad is 90 and Mother is 88. My Mother is coping - but what she needs to know is - she is not alone with this... (so thus I am staying over a few nights a week!). My mother had alzheimers and vascular dementia for nearly 10 years, in the end she couldn't even swallow her own saliva without breathing it into her lungs causing pneumonia which she spent 3 weeks in hospital recovering from to go straight to palliative care - 11 days no food or water. Almost 5 weeks of suffering even though there was a DNR in place

Almost 5 weeks of suffering even though there was a DNR in place I am sorry to read the above Joepublic - I really am... Personally I have not "touched these things or feelings before". It is all new to me! All I can offer my Mother is practical help! I am aged 54 - the worst loss I have ever faced before this was the passing of my dog aged 17.5years (Molly). Not many dogs live till 17.5years - she had a good life - no pain - I had her put to sleep because her back legs were going and she fell into here own shit when she went to loo! This broke my heart - but on reflection I did the right thing! It's difficult when you're asked the same question for the 10th time in 2 hours, but you just have to answer it like its the first time. Personally I'm dreading living "Too long"
