For the fist time even in my life - I saw on the main round a bout into our town - DVSA doing road side checks on vans upto 3.5ton.
Police waving vans over into a slip road off the round a bout.
From a distance - it looked like the they had smoke testing kit with them.
I have seen DVSA (Vosa) pulling lorries over before on the roadside - and I have seen them dipping fuel on carparks (cars). But I have never seen them smoke testing light commercial vehicles before.

That’s funny because they don’t carry out smoke tests at the DVSA test stations as far as I know

Air Quality Management Areas A number of borough councils have been designated ‘Air Quality Management Areas’. This means the council can test vehicles at the roadside and issue fixed penalties to drivers whose vehicles fail.

They are probably just running free-accel smoke tests for this roadside test (FAS) and nothing else.
If they tried to do much beyond that on a modern diesel, you could drive a coach-and-horses through the results that they obtained, as the conditions under which the vehicle was homologated could not be reproduced at roadside.
So, all they are doing is doubling-up on the MoT test, just to make sure that the vehicle has not drifted inbetween inspections.

This was my assumption...
