I have a snap-on set of those. Really good and have saved me quite a few times.

youtu.be/f1-p93XEdQsI couldn’t fathom it out from the pics in the link so went to YouTube for clarity. 40 plus years ago I remember my dad hammering the tang of a file into a broken stud in similar fashion.

Now I can see how they work! The only thing that I cannot see is how you effectively drift the old fixing off the extractor, without damaging the extractor itself in the vice?

I'll find-out : So impressed was I, when I viewed the video, I looked at the business account and thought "Yes. These are a good idea. If they will take that sort of hammering, they must be good-quality. Also, if they stop a job from being held-up, they will pay for themselves instantly."

I got a set of these (off the tool van) years ago. They are not tappered - so don't force the broken fixing tighter (if you understand what I am weakly trying to say?). I tend to got for weld extraction now with snapped bolts and studs - it is just so much easier and quicker - less drilling and the heat from welding just makes everthing come out. Note to myself: Spark eroder for broken things!

My kit turned-up this evening, and out of the box they seem good quality.
I noticed that they were parallel (to add to what you said above) and that makes sense now, as I thought that they may have a slight taper of a few degrees to get a good grip on the screw, but also making it almost impossible to get the screw back off the extractor afterwards!
I can see these being just like my usual method of hammering Torx bits into damaged screw heads, only better adapted.....
