Does the Power steering work off a rack and fluid only or is it electronic?

I am not familiar with this car but my guess is you have electric power steering which always seems to be the first thing to suffer when you have charging issues.

The Mark X is a very nice car. Later ones have electric power steering - the ECU is under the battery.
Is the EPS light on? Have you checked for fault codes? Have you checked for battery supply at the main power feed to the ECU (big thick wires) - I think the feed is from the battery via a fusible link block.
