ok so my transit has been slow to start an smokes when it dose kicker is as you may remember i paid 5 grand for a rebuilt engine last year there was also a oil leak somewhere not terrible but enough to see over the engine ( while looking for it i found the fuel rail lose !) so it went back to the garage an they said it was an 0ring on the fuel pump so they replaced it and claim it didnt smoke this morning ive picked it up an it was still slow to start and they now tell me i need an ecu update to fix it but why is my question ? and would it even fix it at 95 plus vat !

It seems unlikely that an ECU update would fix anything before the mechanical issues have all been dealt-with.
So I would suggest getting a proper diagnosis on the engine mechanicals, specifically fuel-supply to/from the injectors and absolutely everything to do with the turbo & lubrication system if you are seeing oil all over the engine. The crankcase venting needs a thorough review for excess pressurisation.
Don't waste your money on "ECU updates" unless you are certain 100% that the engine is mechanically sound.

that was my thinking the first time i got it back it was running very rough after 500 miles they coded the injectors again an it was ok now this seams not right to me but i dont know what i do know is ive paid good money an had terrible service a grand in labour and ive found 9 bolts lose they just say well thats not right i was told it was oil from the fuel pump it was all over the engine and gearbox but not to the extent that the level dropped noticeably

When you think about it... "ECU updates" sold by dealers is the biggest con going. If you need a software update - it means the software the vehicle was sold with "is not fit for purpose" - for the life of the vehicle. The only reason for changing software (updating it) is because the old software is not up to the job. Your vehicle is not networked to other changing software - it is a stand a lone device and should work from the code it left the factory with! Spud... I would be questioning what the "ECU upgrade" is actually for? You may not be getting an upgrade at all. Some of these Transits have Delphi control systems that have learn values and reset proceedures for injection/rail pressure/metering value control. You may only be getting "service running parameter resets" sold to you as an "upgrade". I would be asking the question - you are the paying customer.

Went to ford and they said its fine maybe it could have a pump learn or something but should be fine as it is charged me 36 quid ! smoke has now stopped to but i did take it back to the original garage because of the clutch leaking and aparently it was an o ring but im unsure of the part name but the bit the pipe goes on at the box was moving a hell of alot ( up and down ) and now its not so im not sure they didnt leave it loose !

This was what I described - for the Delphi system. Have you been using it more for the smoke to stop?
