Hi Lads I am thinking of buying a oscilloscope to play around with the electrics on my cars ( that's if at 83 the old grey matter can take it in ) been looking at a Hanmatek DOS1102 2 channel 7" screen 110 mhz bandwidth 1csa sampling, what do you tech's think would this model be OK for car work and a beginner, been a mechanic/fitter for over 60 years and sorted electric problems out on cars, lorries, buses & plant machines with multimeters & scanners but never used a scope, if I buy one it won't get a lot of use but fancy going deeper into electrics and some think else to pass my time away. Thanks for replies Graham in Sheffield

There was an article in Practical Classics magazine within the last few months on exactly this topic. They bought one of the cheapo scopes and explained how you could use it for some basic tests of various sensors and components.
Unfortunately I give all my back-issues away once I’ve read them so I can’t easily go back and find the article.
Good on you for getting into this at 83. I wish I could work on a vehicle alongside a retired mechanic like you: I could learn so much!

I will see if I can dig out that article - I'm pretty sure that I have all the back issues (from Mrs. Valhalla's shop.......)
There is no need to expend a lot of money if you just want to dabble in this field - i guess you are not looking for the last thing in Reference Waveforms or PC-based data analysis, so the market is quite good for straightforward mini-scopes that you can use either remotely with their own screens, or slightly better, Bluetooth communication to your smartphone (which will have a superb hi-res screen on it)

I have Graham Stoakes excellent book automotive oscilloscopes waveform analysis a great book for beginners, also December's car mechanics mag is doing a piece on oscilloscopes so that should be interesting.

Hi Graham I believe this YouTube channel might be exactly what your looking for He uses a cheap "hacked" picoscope 2204a (around £100 mark) and a few accessories for his videos (sometimes Hantek too) I think he is a tech trainer for VAG group m.youtube.com/c/MechanicMindset/playlists?disable_polymer=true&itct=CA0Q8JMBGAIiEwjarvrf1dPtAhWUGvEFHUjYCNM%3DI use an old UEi handheld labscope quite a bit at work that cost me about £100 used from ebay that works well for my job as an RAC patrol (waterproof and cheap!!) but I used pico a fair bit in another life and still think it's the best for the money Our friend Mr Remmington has a nice website with some sage advice about scopes and equipment tòo!!! www.remmington.info/advice.htm

Thanks Trickydicky For the infor especially from Mr Remmington excellent reading and information, but for you lads time is money, I can play around all day infact all week if I have to my every day and newest car is 16 year old and then I go back to 60 year old, Rover 75 & Rover P4 so you see I don't really need a scope, but it would be another string to my bow, and even at my age you never stop learning its taking it all in that's the problem

I could really do with updating the info (webpage) a bit! Time is what I am short of...! A lot of automotive kit - has speed - capture HZ - you are just not gonna need for automotive diagnostics. It is easy to "waste money" on kit/gear that you don't get full value for - I am the worst offender for this at times!
