Hi all, Today i noticed my power steering making a noise. Ive attached a youtube video of the noise HereHeres whats happening Fluid is topped up (ive checked!) Noise happens with the slightest pressure on the steering in either direction noise gets slightly louder at full lock (in either direction) Havent noticed the noise before, but with the hood/bonnet down you probably wouldnt notice it if you werent specifically listening to the engine My questions are: is this noise normal or should P/S pumps be silent when operating? If its not normal, what could be the problem?

I've not watched the video yet...But...... I have now....sounds like maybe a bearing....on the front of the pump?
Has the drive belt been changed? Belt tension ok?
What mileage is on the car?
Have you noticed a difference in the feel of the steering?
Any leaks from the pump?
Could be the pump is on its way.....
Pugs arent well known to me, mebbe one of the other members may be able to shed some light.....

I did suspect a bearing so i removed the belt, gave the pulley on the PS pump a few turns in each direction. There is maybe 1 or 2 degrees of free play between changing direction. But other than that, it rotates smoothly and silently with no grinding or bumps.

Is the fluid clean/translucent/correct stuff??
If its opaque and smells weird compared to fresh stuff might be worth changing?
People top them up with the wrong stuff or accidentally add screenwash/engine oil or coolant sometimes
If your regularly topping up you may have a leak and be introducing air
If you have a lot of bubbles/foam in the tank the aerated fluid can make a lot of noise

Fluid is correct, im using synthetic.
There are no bubbles/frothing.
Ive syringed 5ml out of the reservoir and theres no particles/contamination. Its slightly darker than fresh fluid but nothing too bad. Purged the lines by turning the wheels full lock several times too.
I cant find any obvious issues but that noise just doesn't sound natural. Ill probably take it over to the garage tomorrow and get their opinion on it. Hopefully nothing serious but will keep you posted!

Your video doesn't sound like bearing noise, more like a pressure-release valve actuation noise.
I have heard this before on PAS systems where the pump is under excessive load from a faulty steering box (in the case of Landrover - but your issue could well be the rack), and the only way to diagnose that was to fit a pressure gauge on the pump outlet to prove that the pump was being forced to run at its maximum outlet pressure - effectively forcing the pump's internal pressure release valve to open to protect itself.
I would suggest that your garage tries to pin-down what the actual pressures are around the PAS system - that will get the diagnosis right first time.

I think the 206 has a PAS pressure switch/sensor so it might be possible to test the pressure at that point!!!

Yes you are correct. There is a sensor switch on the HP line. I will talk to the garage about that this tomorrow.
