Several years ago I bought a Ring unit after it came out top in a CM magazine product test. It was good when I got it but it went down-hill after a year or two and all I could do was throw it out. Since then I have always taken the CM product tests with a pinch of salt. I have had numerous wheel pumps over the years and I presently have about four. I have concluded that the best pump for home use is the old vertical single cylinder pump that stands about knee-high and has a tee-shape handle. All the others have some sort of disadvantage such as yards of wire or tendancy to fall over. Unfortunately they are not made very much any more but I managed to find a picture of one here (you can leave out the pressure gauge) www.ebay.ie/itm/Classical-Hand-Air-Pump-With-Tyre-Pressure-Gauge-Grip-Car-Bike-Cycle-Bicycle/264603986205?hash=item3d9ba0691d:g:j9wAAOSwnKFeJFBo

The tyre inflator I was using the other day is a MICHELIN DPS digital power sources. It seemed quick to inflate a fully deflated tyre but that is all I know about them, I'm not one who normally uses those devices.

Researching this a bit more, its turning into a minefield for what is such a simple item.....
The Ring units appear to come out tops, but my opinion of them doesnt seem to match that of the any of the reviews....
Maybe I'm being too critical?
The majority of these sub -£50 units are based on the usual ' can type' motor running off 12v with a gear drive 'compressor' based on a cylinder/crank/piston assembly with cheap petal valves....the displacement being around a few cc's.....and, obviously as the pressure rises, the free air delivery drops, motor load increases the time to pump up to a pressure rises accordingly...
I've seen some 'dual cylinder' air pumps on ebay, these seem to have a decent sized motor driving a 'compressor' placed at each end of the armature....but again reviews are mixed, quality doesnt appear to be all that good either..
The ubiquitous foot pump of yesteryear seems to be the only resonable answer for me, for the time being.... So I think I'll have to stick with the RAC dual cylinder footpump I bought from Argos for now....
So thanks for all your input...
