This 2015 merc E220 cdi automatic had a battery completely run down. After it was started with a jump start it ran fine but would not select any gear ,it was stuck in neutral. Codes showed no comms between trans and ecu. Codes cleared fine but still would not select gears. Any ideas out there ?

Normally on these if you can't select the gears the brake light switch on the pedal has failed - they are a four wire design - two wires operate the brake lights - the other two wires are a HMI interlock for selecting gears (HMI = Human machine interface). You can test these - just take switch out - then test with multimeter for function - they just gotta make a circuit on both pairs. This would be where I would start - pedal switch - then move onto fuses - then "the hell of the trans pack controller"

Did you get to the bottom of the problem as to why the battery ran flat?
My thoughts on this are that the two problems may not have occurred in the order you believe; the flat battery might be the result of the transmission selection problem.
Earlier Mercs used to have a plethora of problems around these two symptoms, and whether your case example is the same, I wouldn't like to speculate.

Sorry for delay in getting back on this one. It went into merc to have it checked out. They said there was dampness in one of the modules and they replaced boath batteries. So far so good.
