The above car has 350,000km on clock but full service history. It suddenly stalled and revs maxed at 1000 and a big cloud of black smoke out exhaust. It was limped to garage and found some codes relating to MAP and IAT - cleared codes and all ok but found loose connector on MAP. Fixed this up and car was ok for approx 1 week but exact same problem has returned and it was towed to the garage but when they started it problem had disappeared. No codes showing now. Feels like it could be wiring problem in a loom but being intermittent it is needle in a haystack stuff. Could it be EGR related. Any ideas much appreciated.

Sorry I dont have the codes, i just have a report from the garage - main Ford dealer. Report said they read codes with IDS so I assume they cam check pedal positions. The only thing they found is loose MAP connector and that all wiring checked out ok. They said they drove car reading live data and all checked out ok.
If pedal goes open circuit, would it behave like this and also what is causing the black smoke.

"All wiring checked out ok" What does this mean?

Sorry I only have limited information from what the main dealer garage has told me and the service report but Service Mgr said they checked the wiring looms and wiring going to the MAP sensor (as this is what showed original fault code) and it all seemed ok. They were looking for damaged or chaffed wiring around the car but didnt find anything. They didnt refer to the throttle pedal at any stage. The main dealer had the car for 3 or 4 days. It is now with an independent garage (close to where we broke down) who is bringing in a guy who does a lot of Ford work and he spoke about throttle pedal and EGR as possible causes. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it but being intermittent it is difficult.

if its an internal pcm fault , at that mileage i wouldnt rule anything out.

The exact report from Ford main dealer says: Put on IDS, fault for MAP sensors and IAT, Checked wiring at MAP sensor all pass, checked sensor & found connector off & loose. Refir and secured, cleared faults, test no faults showing up on IDS. Additional notes: Turbo pipe & intercooler brackets broken. Slight hesitation in second gear & drives fine.
Van is now with another garage who seem to think it is EGR related or accelerator pedal. They are investigating at present. Any further thoughts from anybody?

Throttle pedal go open circuit on these What where the full dtc's and descriptions your details are a bit vague Can they view accelerator pedal positions seems like the most likely culprit imo. as it seems to be stuck at 1000 rpm. on pugs if the wiper stalk system called comms 2000 is disconnected to mimic a failure then; wipers come on intermittent and sidelights come on. faults are stored in system,it does this so you can limp home. try another pedal,or disconnect and check it!
