I understand that the target is now to ban hybrid cars at the same time as IC-engined vehicles in 2035. Someone has cottoned-on that they are a con, and just weigh a bit more to pollute the planet a bit more. Remmington has the measure on this one; the problem is too many people on this planet, all consuming resources faster than they can say "capitalism". Once again, the intervention of government will just confuse matters! They haven't yet grasped the facts. It has taken them nearly 10years to fail miserably to provide a universal broadband service across the country, and that is an easier task than upgrading all the power networks, so draw your own conclusions. 2035 is 15years away, and they are still moving to goalposts on fibre-optic distribution........ Now factor-in the transmission losses for the power that is going to be required. If global warming was a problem beforehand, you haven't seen anything yet!! Those losses all go into heating of the atmosphere, and they need to be accounted-for when considering the overall efficiency of BEV's as well. We make a whole load of power here in my part of the Highlands, yet we pay a special surcharge on all of our electricity costs, because apparently there are huge spans of cables between the power stations and us. Even though I can drive for 15mins from my front door, and look at several MW of wind-turbines just on this part of the Isle...... So how the cost of distribution gets divvied-up in the future, rural to urban, is anyone's guess - I think not!!!!! Of course the Westminster government is going to screw us over........ I really think this is the problem. It worries me!It is such a difficult thing to address: Insisting people have less kids! "How do you word it?". The human race is now so good at stopping. Plague, pestilence and war. We put so much effort into health car now - we are all living longer - less of us die in infancy. And for the record: I am not into the idea of things like China's one child policy or India's hidden sterilisation of a million people in the 70's. These were just very cruel plans to achieve less food shortages. They did work thou! But they were very cruel when implemented. Also I have had a large family - well above the average UK size of 1.7 kids (world average is 2.4 kids - and when it exceeds the dead 2.0 number you get population growth). Yes I have researched this subject! WE now have mega cities of millions - don't worry about oil - or sending your army to the middle east in the quest for diesel. We will be going to war to get water - if the population expands at the current growth rate. The best way to have a controlled reduction in the population growth of the planet is: 1: Women's education and empowerment, especially in developing countries. If women are given more chances in life than simply moving from being a daughter to being a mother then they have fewer children. 2: Make contraception widely available and remove the stigma around it. Again in developing countries there can be many religious issues around contraception and that leads to not only massive population growth but also the spread of HIV/AIDS.

I have not seen so much common sense in one thread ever. It's a pity we can't get some politicians and greens to read it. I won't rehash the points again, just let you all know that I agree.
(PS: I was going to throw in one of the old jokes about the 2.4 children but I think the issue is much too serious.)

(PS: I was going to throw in one of the old jokes about the 2.4 children but I think the issue is much too serious.) Another real problem is: As health care improves and we live longer - we are retired longer - need our pensions longer. There are lots of western countries encouraging people to have more kids - get more younger people in their countries population. Because more younger people in work - pay more tax and keep the old in pensions. But it is short term fix - because - you have greater mass of people growing older and living longer - the formula does not work - only in the short term - but politicians only worry about the short term - they are voted in - for three year popularity contests (this is my feelings towards the current political class). If you reduce the birth rate - some western countries would go skint - not enough young people to pay old peoples pensions. Raise the pension age? The French are already revolting at this idea (Fireman fighting with Police in the streets). You are not seeing too much of this on the BBC - because the BBC is funded by the Government (BBC = British Broadcasting Conspiracy). And we in the UK - already have the highest retirement age in Europe. A pension scheme or government pension pots are just - fancy pyramid schemes. They are... They need more and more people paying in to make them work - not less. I have given this a lot of thought over the last year or so. The population boom. Nobody is gonna take a hundred years of hardship to solve the problem. A controlled population reduction would mean financial Armageddon. Too many people - too many governments have too much to loose - money wise to enter into it. Everybody including the stockmarkets are into GROWTH - not shrinkage... Growth is the key to the modern world - it is what makes it work. They have even worked out a way to earn out of CO2 emissions - trading in it (I joke not). Water and food shortages from population growth will just - line the pockets of someone. Simple supply and demand will drive prices up - higher prices lead to higher profit margins. Wealthy people will not starve or go thirsty - they will just collect more money. The only thing Governments will go for is war - war equates to money - you have mass production of arms and hardware - you invade a country - take over its currency and make them pay you back for all the money you spent - bombing them to kingdom come. I read today - we only have 50 years of cheap easy to get oil left - all the other oil on the planet is gonna cost big money to extract. Alternative fuel cars will come when - fossil fuel starts to get expensive - so thus giving greater value to other types of motive power sources - supply and demand - the pricing structure of all time. I can see the problem - but I have no answers to it. I am only a simple car mechanic. But the older I get - the more I have moved from being a staunch capitalist - I have softened and I am growing a bit of a social conscience (albeit a small one thou). We cannot keep breeding and consuming in the name of financial growth. The planet just cannot take anymore. Speech over... The whole Greta Thunberg thing gives me the creeps a bit. I fear she is being groomed into her vocal thoughts by a load coercive adults.

The problem we can all see - solutions at the moment are all about "displacement of emissions", not cleaning the whole process of transportation.
I have the solution, and it isn't such a silly idea;
Want to cut your emissions by 50% ? That's all the emissions - CO2, CO, NOx, soot. Sounds a good idea?.......
....use your car for 50% of the journeys that you currently use it for!!
This is what Mrs. Valhalla has resolved to do. We only live 1.2miles from the shop, but she could see that she was making excuses about using the cars, all the way up to Christmas, and the fuel bills were starting to escalate. So she has resolved to get out the door 20mins earlier, come rain or shine, wrap up warm and dry, and walk to work. The cars get used approximately 20% of the journeys now, and it really doesn't cost much extra in time in the Winter, not after the screens have been wiped/scraped. Not only are the cars happier for not having warm-up cycles twice, or more, each day, but the oil is staying cleaner in each one, and the wear-and-tear is minimised. As a treat, she gets a chocolate for walking, which just about balances the calories....

Taxation classes are on carbon emissions
But need to be on vehicle weight
I can't see the point of building a 3 ton car full of technology that costs £80k and drives like sh*t
That does the same thing as a car that weighs 750kgs has the same emissions but is fun to drive for £15k

Its the biggest joke on the planet..... The way I see it, the misinformed politicians make the 'rules' to line their pockets....
When I worked at ICI Wilton in the 70's, we had our own power station capable of generating 280MW, supplying the site with electricity and hp steam....boilers ran on coal or oil....emissions monitoring using the latest technology to ensure minimal pollution... Excess electric was exported to the grid...
I keep 'arguing' with my son, who is 34. He has two young children and of course he's been brainwashed by the whole 'we need to go green' thing....I keep telling him there's no such thing as carbon neutral...its all hype/ bullshit which ever way you try to tell it..

It said in the news the other day that vehicles are responsible for 12% of dangerous particulate matter
Wood burning stoves using "wet wood" are responsible for 38%

Well you can crunch numbers till the cows come home.... I still hold the belief that the governments past and present are a bunch of ill informed morons that feed this shite to the masses and sadly a lot of folk will believe it!!
I dont dispute that the world could be a better place and and mankind can make a contribution by improvement....
But I really hate it when people say 'cars are bad...we should ban them for the better good....' So we now go from the internal combustion engine running petrol/diesel and turn to electric coz its cleaner....maybe so, but dont forget the manufacturing processes required to make the batteries, the motors, and most of all, how do we recharge them? Burn more fossil fuel?
