My daughter has a 55-plate Micra 1.2 E. Tonight, her steering went very heavy and the red PS light came on. She stopped the car and turned the ignition off - apparently the NATS security indicator light then started flashing. Sometime later, she started the engine again and everything was back to normal. I see that this referred to as an Electrically Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) so assume this is an electrical issue. I haven't had a chance to look at the car yet, but any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as what I need to look for !

My first check would be a straightforward battery stress test. That is leave the heater fan, lights and heated windows on for a few minutes then try and start the car. Then check the alternator output is holding up under load.

Battery / alternator are fine. Eye-balled EPAS unit down back of engine and from inside car. Totally inaccessible and no wiring on view. Came to the conclusion that, in reality, I wasn't going to be able to do anything about this "fault". The owner's manual actually mentions that if the PS light comes on, stop the car ASAP, wait 20 seconds and then restart. If the light comes on again and stays on, go to a Nissan dealer !! So, we'll just have to hope that the fault doesn't arise too often and will reset when it does !! Not an ideal outcome ! (There seems to be a LOT of bad press on the internet about Nissan Micra and the dreaded power steering problem - a bit worrying ... !

Hi Guys, I'm new on here so please bare with me. I have a problem with EPAS on nissan micra k12 1,2 sport on a 56 plate I have been trawling the internet for second hand unit for EPAS control unit and motor. I note that there seems to be multiple part units used for the lifespan of this model. My question is do I need to have a unit with the exact same part number or will any unit for any nissan micra k12 do the job. Also am I better getting a second hand part or getting someone like acspowersteering to refurbish my existing unit. I can easily get a second hand unit but finding it hard to source one with the same part number. I hope someone can offer advice on this. I attach photo showing the part number for reference Attachment Deleted

Have you inspected the pins on the connector plugs for corrosion?
Where’s old man and Tom Causer when you need them 😆

Thanks joepublic for replying.
My mechanic tells me that the unit needs replacing. I trust his diagnosis. I've used him for years.
So I know Nissan used different parts for the micra over the years. 48810AX605, 48810AX600, 48810BC00A are the ones I have come across.
So does anyone know if I have to match the part numbers exactly, or can I use any of them? Also are the connectors the same for each part number?
Grateful for any info anyone can give.

Just get your local Nissan dealer to give you the applicable part number(s) - if necessary, ask them for a quote, they should provide you with the correct current part number on that.

Guys, Thanks"tea maker" for your reply, but I know the part number I have on my vehicle I am having difficulty sourcing the part from vehicle dismantlers. My question is can I use one of the other part numbers instead, because I can get one of those..
Some people seem to think you can, others say you can not.
Thanking you for any advice you can give.

Clearly you know the part number fitted - but you don't know the supercessions or equivalent part numbers, that is where your dealer will be able to help.

Dealer unfortunately refused to give me any details of part numbers/supercessions.

Find a Nissan group on fb, ask for a recommendation for a compliant Nissan parts dept somewhere in the uk.
Audi Crewe have a really good parts dept should anyone need similar for older Audis
