I attended a recent Forensic fire investigations seminar and the Zafira models were mentioned. It also appears that on vehicles they have investigated fires in that some of those vehicles have had protective plastic covers in various locations removed and not refitted, he went on to say that water ingress into electrical connections can cause short circuits and where large current demands are present, the short circuit causes the fires. Clearly these causes will not be easy to identify after the fire has been put out.
The forensic with photos showed us a Citroen six months old that had been on fire in front of the customers house. The story went something along the lines of;
The car was bought by a married couple brand new. Six months into the ownership of the car the customer had repeatedly been going back to the main dealers complaining of difficult starting in a morning and advising the dealers that the starter circuit was very slow to turn over the engine and that the headlamps would significantly dim during the starting procedure.
Repeated attempts to reproduce the same effect that the customer was complaining about failed, the dealers tech's really struggling to find the true cause of the problem. After six months of repeats of the same problem the dealership fired off the customer. The dealership could not find anything wrong with the car.
One night the male told his wife you go and walk the dog, this being about 10.00 pm and I'll sort the car. He went out to the car and started to un-clip some fuel hoses and electrical wiring under the bonnet. Seeing the evidence clearly showed he did not know what he was doing. He then went into the passengers side of the car and opened the glove box and put an accelerant in and started a fire, and then closing the glove box before locking the car up and going back into the house.
A neighbour saw smoke and flames from inside the car and came across to tell the customer, who then rang the fire brigade and they came and put the fire out. The following day the customer rang the dealership and told them that the car had set a fire on its own last night and this was more than likely because of the faulty starter motor circuit and wiring.
The dealer was having none of it so they contacted the vehicle manufacturer and they then contacted the relevant authorities who contacted the Forensics. After a very thorough investigation and many photographs showing how the forensics traced the fire around the car to the origin it was concluded that the fire was started in the glove box and the dealer and manufacturer were not found to be at fault. They never said what happen to the couple who planned and made the fire happen.

We had a major fire in a multi-story car park in Cork city about two weeks ago. Sixty cars were destroyed but fortunately no-one was hurt. The first rumour was that the car that caused the fire was a Zafira.

The rumour is when she parked the car it was smoking. Clever girl. Couldn't have picked a better spot to cause mayhem. Presumably she will be held partly-responsible, if the investigation proves it was the Zafira that started the fire?
I reckon the insurance companies must be sweating a little at the moment; 60x cars destroyed + demolition costs for car-park + rebuild costs for car park + incidental expenses to cover relocations of adjacent businesses.......That could severely dent your NCB.....

Its a very well known published fact now that these Zafia's are a serious fire concern. Two many have raised their heads now showing fires popping up all around the country. I can't see the woman being held accountable for that. In the day and age we live we could not even find a nearby field to park the unsafely manufactured car in, never mind find a safe place on the side of the street somewhere. The industry needs to slow down the production of car manufacturing and look more along the lines of maintaining and keeping the cars we have got on the road in a safer condition for longer.
