We have a bright green 2007 Fiesta Zetec S Celebration which is being fitted with the 2L ST engine and used mainly as a track car. However Id like to tidy the engine bay up and paint the bits Ford missed when they originally painted it and some minor corrosion spots around seams etc.
As its in the engine bay, it doesnt have to be a superior finish so I want to try and spray it myself. The paint apparently is 2 Pack or "basecoat" if I understood the paint shop chap correctly, and I know myself that 2 Pack requires an airfed mask etc etc so, its not suitable for DIY use in my opinion and is a definate "leave it to the pro" option , BUT my question to you expert chaps is......Can the Basecoat option paint be applied and left "as is" and therefore givng a matt type finish or does it need a clear coat for protection. Either way is the basecoat option a diy option I could use with my DIY compressor and half decent spray gun.
My humble thought on spraying over rattle-can application is that I imagine spraying would produce a better finish over the engine bay area....and be less expensive
Thanks for any advice.

Just because the original coat is 2 pack, it doesn't mean you have to use that on top. Anything will do, like cellulose or enamel. The main problem is matching colours with touching up, but you can get away with more in an engine bay as it's a bit shady. Make sure any rust is well dealt with or it'll just come back through in no time. I'd just clean it up well and use a rattle can of primer then a colour coat, again in a rattle can (I like using the cheap air brushes). I wouldn't bother with a clear coat over the top.
