I think we all in our "heart of hearts" knew this to be the case.

Sometimes one wonders with what we have done and put up with heath wise its a miracle we are still here in good health. Think of the brake dust we have blown about before the withdrawal of asbestos linings in 1997 - new cars stopped being fitted with asbestos linings in 1993 - but pattern shoes and and pads had asbestos in the mix till 1997. Which means it was long after the year 2000 till we stopped being exposed to it... Never thought MMA welding (Arc welding with flux covered rods) looked healthy. MIG in Argon mixes or CO2 does look cleaner. Never mind I am still getting the roll ups down my neck.

The asbestos goes back to the very early 1980's when I started in the trade, and even then back into the 1970's I used to fix cars with my dad at home in our garage so was faced with asbestos then as well. A full life time working in pollution breathing, tasting, smelling etc all these pollutants and yes welding fumes, underseal, and body panel sealants etc really had a strong piercing smell that you breathed in and could taste in the back of your throat. Now after some 35 years H & S catch up!

I did an H & S course last year and the largest group of professionals reporting new cases of asbestosis from their work environment is...… Would you believe teachers! Asbestos in buildings and pin boards also contained asbestos. It took the life of Steve McQueen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_McQueen

Well, that's great news if you happen to be "into" classic car restoration. HSE are saying that normal ventilation is insufficient (i.e. draughty workshop) and that fume extraction is necessary. Except, of course, that implies your shielding gas is going to be overwhelmed by the inrush of fresh air around the fume extraction head? Or is this a case of wearing a face mask with positive ventilation? That sounds like "fun", I must say!!
I think that I need to elect what I'm going to die from first, then worry about dying from all the other things after that.
The one thing I have no intention, whatsoever, of dying from is boredom......
