Over the last few days my Toshiba laptop shuts itself down without warning. It then becomes non-responsive and the only way to get it up and running again is to do a power cycle. It is getting warm but it's warm now as I'm tickling the ivories. The only other thing I have noticed is it seems to do it if I am playing a game online ie Football,Snooker, or Car race games. Only one game at a time could this be the cause Memory issue? One for Rhyds I would think or other technical gurus.

How long does it run for before it shuts down? Can you hear the processor fan running? Is there plenty of air cooling around the laptop, how warm is the air coming out of the air duct for the processor? Have you checked any inlet air filters for partial blockage?
Have you looked in Task Manager to see if there is anything resource hungry that may be causing problems?
Just a few random thoughts of my own...might save a bit of time before rhyds comes on...

Chippie is on the right track here I think. My first port of call would be, as he says, to check the fans are turning and then to either blow out the air vents with a can of compressed air (avoid using a garage line unless its totally clean and not too high pressure!) or by gently running a vacuum cleaner pipe over it to clear out any dust. Laptops have temp sensors and if the system runs too hot they tend to just go "thunk" and close everything down and refuse to start up again until they've cooled.
Also, what browser are you using? Some browsers (Firefox especially) can get very resource hungry running flash games in browser windows.

Might be worth cleaning the air vents out, then let the laptop have a bit of time to itself whilst it is plugged into the mains.
Reason I say that is that my venerable Dell E6520 had a bad problem last week, for the first time in about 8years, with a similar issue. It was due to some sort of recent Win7Pro update, and seemed to sort itself out after 24hours. All I did, having realised that it was grinding itself into a fireball, was to leave it jacked-up on a table for 24hours whilst Defender (or whatever other obscure Windows Service) was running after the update, then miraculously it seemed to claw its way back to life the next day, and I haven't looked back since then. What I noticed at the time was that the fans were not running well (if at all) and the processor temps were sky-high, so everything was throttled-back.
Who needs viruses when we have Windows to contend-with?

Who needs viruses when we have Windows to contend-with? Windows does like to randomly start rebuilding search indexes (Especially after updates). We used to have the same problem with a fleet of low power vista machines so we'd leave them running overnight (with power settings changed to keep the systems from going to sleep)

We used to have the same problem with a fleet of low power vista machines so we'd leave them running overnight (with power settings changed to keep the systems from going to sleep) It was an odd one in my case, as I have never seen this particular machine ever run so slow - it was barely able to function. Every time I looked at the Task Manager, never the easiest of tools to decipher, I just got lost within the Windows Services references. All I could see was that something within Windows itself was seemingly the problem; loads of disk activity to 85% capacity, and CPU activity jumping between 60% and 90% almost continuously. That went on for several hours, and I was seriously thinking of replacing the laptop once it looked duff.

Fan is working and laptop does get hot but not to hot to touch. I've taken onboard peoples suggestions and given the laptop a hoover and clean. I haven't as yet since tried out my theory that one of the games may be the problem ie runs slow after a while of playing it.

Latest update on my Toshiba laptop issue(s). Up and till a couple of days ago it was behaving itself as of late it won't power up. I managed a couple of times to power cycle the laptop and it started but tonight it's not having it. The power button is orange and not green as it should be but when I remove the battery the power button turns green but won't power up. Do I need another battery or have I got something else wrong with the bladdy thing? It's a few years old now but not as old as me before anyone says owt. Using my back up Lenvo laptop atm but prefer my Tosh. Any suggestions please ta.

Oh wow...yeah it will be soon...how time flies.... Hope you get your lappie sorted.... Son-in-law rang me earlier and it turns out the laptop won't power up. He recons the motherboards f*cked. I've worked out the Toshiba Laptop is twelve years old as I bought it in early 2006 so I've had my moneys worth. He's taken the hard drive out and connected to one of his devices and the hard drive is ok. So I'm going to keep it as an external hard drive I can still use on my other lap top.
