Being attracted to the reasonable price, a friend has bought a 2004 1.8 SCi Mondeo Ghia. About 80k and been well serviced, at approx 10k intervals. Any advice on potential faults and preventative maintenance? It's just had a new timing chain for some reason. I've heard the 6 speed boxes aren't the best. Many thanks in advance

Only thing I have heard is they sometimes have a habit of ingesting their inlet manifold cooling flaps or something....but not sure if it was fixed on later Mk 3 models (ie post 2003). Mr B will know for sure

There where a change in inlet manifold design in 2004 I think
Didn't sell well did these direct injection mondeos

There aren't many SCI mondeos about, mainly because ford didn't build them for very long and they aren't very good!
MMT6 6 Spd box don't give many problems...
Karl will probably remember more than me I was only a youngster when these were new!!

Where have you heard the transmissions are no good? More Internet bullshit

Thanks, there was an article on gearboxes in the Car Mechanics mag in January, listing all the main gearboxes and their strengths/weaknesses. They said the Ford MT82 6 speed box had a few issues, I presumed the Mondeo was fitted with it but good news if the MMT6 is ok.

Mtx 75 is the old 5 speed box And like said the mmt6 is a good strong transmission

The sci stands for smart charge injection
Fords first attempt at high pressure petrol engine
So together with all the Normal mondeo weak points
You have swirl flaps, high pressure fuel system, pencil coils and DMF to go wrong
If its cheap I guess it maybe slightly better than a diesel

Here's brief description of the rubbish set up oh and sci stands for smart charge injection The 1.8L Duratec-SCi engine is the first Ford engine with direct petrol injection. The engine is based on the 1.8L Duratec-HE engine with multipoint fuel injection, already introduced on Mondeo 2001. The requirement for powerful four-stroke engines which also use little fuel has led to the introduction of direct petrol injection. The high efficiency and reduction in fuel consumption resulting from leaner running offers decisive advantages here and shows the path for the future. Because of the ever increasing demands made on exhaust emissions, the carbon dioxide output becomes more and more important. However, this can only be reduced by lowering the fuel consumption. Direct petrol injection systems are characterised by high pressure injection directly into the combustion chamber. The fuel/air mixture is created inside the combustion chamber in the same way as for a diesel engine (internal mixing). In a certain load range, direct petrol injection allows combustion with an extremely lean mixture (Lambda > 1), and here only a small amount of fuel is injected compared with multipoint fuel injection. Bet they get coked up and die ;D I've never come across one in the flesh

Didn't these have an issue with lack of fuel feed if the car was parked at an angle with a low fuel level?
Pretty sure someone I know complained of that.

I presume the petrol model has a DMF too? although I guess it gets an easier life than on the diesel.
