This is big new here in Ireland as a variety of BM-trouble-you's are also being recalled for alleged "cutting out" The ranges listed are manufactured between 2007 and 2011, and include 1, 3 and X1 series and Z4, all petrol and diesel. The estimated repair time is 2hrs per vehicle but there is no mention whatsoever as to what exactly is causing the fault. www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2018/0509/961355-bmw-recall/

USA had 700,000 BMW Series 3 models 7-11 years old.

Funny enough, I remember a story where our previous CEO was driving into work in his leased 800mile-old 5 series when it suddenly and unexpectedly shutdown in the middle of a 3 lane one-way system during morning rush hour. It caused carnage with the traffic, and he rang two directors to come and rescue him.
Whilst I didn't witness it myself, I believe the the excoriation he handed down over the phone to the lease company was apocalyptic. It went on for something like 20 minutes.......
The following week, a different car was in his parking spot....

Cutting out was possibly from over heat of an main connection in central junction box
Over heat/fire was by the looks of it an digital heater resistor element

I wonder if this recall will cover the indicators too 😉 No indication it will. We'll have to see what direction the recall goes. BMW drivers don't use indicators anyway. I'll get me coat.

Been hearing lots about this from the general public on the radio..There were 2 that said the power steering still worked after the engine had cut out!! Yeah righto.
By the sounds of it they were aware of the fault and tried to cover it up then :/

I believe it is corrosion at the contact surface where the main battery lead bolts into the CJB (as Karl says above). Why this doesn't show-up with charging problems beforehand, I don't know?
This sort of design is common enough, so someone at BMW electrical design must be counting their days a bit closely - how can you mess-up a design that has been refined over many years? Probably a cost-saving from some idiot in Purchasing?
